Hey Guys,
I'm in the Northeast (Long Island) and preparing to take my aftermarket wheels off for the winter. I want to put some new 34" tires on my stock FX4 Sport Six spoke wheels when i get them put back on and was looking for some advice. I have searched those forums up and down and this is what i've narrowed down to:
- Nitto Ridge Grapplers in 275/65R20_295/60R20
- BFG K02 in 285/65R20
Right now i'm leaning towards Ridge Grappler 275/65/R20, I don't want a dedicated snow/ice tire because i still want the aggressive look and where i am we don't typically encounter super harsh winters where it is necessary. This size runs a but narrow (not my favorite but i can deal) but as i've read this is better for snow also, plus i can keep my weight down (295/60R20 will bump up 5lbs. a corner).
The BFGs at 285/65R20 run the same weight as the 275/65R20 Grappler but its also an increase in diameter and i only have 3.31 Gears, i know these are 3 peak rated which is great for what i'm looking for but i've also read mixed reviews on the BFG in wet conditions, alot claiming Ridge Grapplers were a improvement over BFG, and BFG also runs smaller than advertised.
Currently running 285/60R20 AT2 on my Fuels and i've lost some power over the stock P-Type Hankooks but 'm comfortable with it. If anyone has insight on these tires or sizes i would appreciate any advice, I hate being indecisive
Some one on here posted from WI commentating on the Grapplers not being the greatest in the Snow
a good alternative I have herd about from alot of places is the Falken AT3W, also having the 3pms shown below
One problem with the Three Peak Mountain Snow Flake symbol is that in order to achieve that rating it only needs to perform 10% than a conventional tire.
Thats why you see them on some many A/T tires.
If you want a 3PMSF Tire be aware it doesnt take much.
I haven’t had my RGs in deep snow yet. But we did get a little bit of snow the other day and I had 0 traction issues. Same with them in rain and flooded roads. I haven’t had any issues with them at all.
Appreciate the comments guys, I looked into wildpeaks but they are a good 5lbs heavier on all sizes when compared to other manufacturers. Also looked into Duratracs but heard they wear rather quickly and can become quite loud.
Sounds like you are thiniking along the same lines as me, I want the most agressive lightweight tire i can get
for me its looking like one of these
General Grabber 115T A/TX 640AB 14/32 44lbs
Geolandar A/T G015 UTQG: 600 A B 13/32 41 lbs
BFGoodrich All terrain T/A KO2 C 112/109S None 15/32 46 lbs
The problem for me is the KO2 while awesome and all dont seem to justify the added cost over the Grabber A/TX

no doubt about it, those K02’s are nice and light but the cost of them is up there
I'm using different sizes, but in a similar boat. I think I'm going to end up with the Yokohama Geolandar A/T G015. Decent look, but more important to me is that there good for snow, ice, rain, etc as well as being lighter and quiet on the road. The cost isn't bad either.
I am also looking for a good winter tire for the midwest. We get a good mix of rain, sleet, ice and snow. I am thinking about keeping the stock wheels until spring.

A true winter tire such as the Bridgestone Blizzak?
