What setup should I do?
I have a 2004 f150 5.4l supercab 4wd truck. I am looking to make my truck a monster off road and still a safe princess on the highway. I want to add a more tough look by puting 35s and a lift on it. My local tire shop who is known as being stingy told me that in order to get 35s I need to get a 6inch suspension lift and new wheels. A few mechanics told me this is b/s and they are trying to get more money. I would like to just get lift and tires but minimum lift for the tires clearance. (I would like to not go to far over 2 grand). So I am looking for lift and tire recommendations guys. Thanks
If you have stock wheels then with a 6" lift you would need new wheels due to back space of the rims. If you want to keep your stock wheels you can eather go with a leveling kit up to 3". the only problems with a LK is it puts all the angles in the front way off. It will work, its just bad on the axles/ joints exct. If you go with a 4" rancho lift kit you can run your stock rims. All you need to run 35s is a 1.5" LK but you will half to trim some of the plastic in the front if you run a LK.
yes, but if you plan on doing any offroading keep in mind that with not much room in the wheel well, if you articulate the suspension much you risk having the lugs grab your fender. I haven't seen this happen personally but had someone on here tell me a friend of theres had a LK unsure of size and 35s and was going up or down a hill and caused 1400 bucks worth of damage to a fender where a wheel tucked up into it. Personally If it was me and it would only be used offroading in say, the yard I would go with 35s but if you are gonna do any offroading then I would go LK and 33s or the 4" rancho and 35s. you can keep your stock wheels in both apps. the only downfall with the 4", like all F-150 lifts, you must cut a small part of the fromt cross member. But it can always be welded back on at a later date.
I've got a 2 1/2" leveling kit with 295x70x17 (33.5x12) Toyo MT's and it does great on and off the highway with no rubbing. I had 35's on before but had to take it easy off road with them.
I have an 06 4wd, which should be pretty much identical to yours in terms of suspension and spacing. I put a 3" leveling kit and 35's on it, and it handles beautifully off-road and on. The only downfall is the rubbing at full extension on the control arms. If you could find a tire narrower than 12.5 I think there should be no problem, because they rub only when turned fully. I don't have the lower plastic piece on my bumper so that is no problem, but I have talked to others that said they had to trim a little off to fit. I drive it pretty hard off road, and still the only problem is at full turn. You have the 5.4, so the 35's should effect you even less than me, but the appearance and off-road capability more than make up for the slight dip in acceleration. The whole set up cost me less than $1000, so definitely worth it. I hope this helps - good luck.
