Default Toyo Open Country M/T vs Nitto Trail Grappler

So I've had some sales reps at 4x4 shops tell me bad things about both, and try to sell me the other. I need an honest opinion from someone.

Usage: I live in Canada so I need it for all occasions. I will drive it to school every day, so I need it to be alright on the road. I currently don't off road with trucks, but there is the possibility that I start.

Any advice? This will be my first truck with mods.

I have had Toyo's on my 2005 personal truck in a 37x13.50 and now in a 38x15.50 and they are great tires year round. I got just over 50k out of the 37's (mostly highway miles). The downfall is they are pricey, heavy and have a very aggressive tread which will bring down your gas mileage and let you know they are there when they howl, but nothing terrible. BUT in snow and muck they are excellent and clean out very well.

I have also heard excellent things about the Nitto's, a big plus is they typically weigh a bit less and are a tad quieter than the toyo's. PLUS in certain sizes they can be cheaper. I have never run a set, but am considering them possibly on my 2012. The sidewall is pretty wicked and from what I hear most folks are seeing excellent wear and longevity thus far.

I don't think you can go wrong with either!

Both tires have great reviews. People love Toyo's, and people love Trail Grapplers. Either way you'll be satisfied.

PS: Nitto Trail Grapplers! Haha, just kidding, but seriously. . .

My next door neighbour has the Toyo's. He works in the oil patch here in Southern Alberta. He puts on roughly 40,000km a year on his Dodge 3500. With talking to him on man occassions about trucks/tires ect.. he loves his Toyo's in mud, gravel, dry summer pavement. He HATES them in winter on pavement due to lack of grip and sipes. He strickly uses pure winter tires for the winter season after several times of almost having accidents due to the Toyo's not holding grip in slushy/icy/snowy paved roads.

Take it for what its worth.. I use to work at Michelin Tire plant for many years and know abit about tires. The Toyo and Trail's are not ice friendly.

I've heard that the Toyo's a quite loud. I'll personally be going with the Trail Grapplers in the spring.

I made that mistake, totally regret it. Replaced my KM2s with Toyo MTs because I could get a better price and I miss the KM2s so much. The Toyos look badass but are far heavier, killing mileage and power. They perform worse in rain, don't self clean as well in mud, and the softer tread chunks on rocks. They are also directional tires so they pull to the right on the highway (perfect balance, alignment, etc). The Nitto's are just as heavy and are also directional, just mirror image on the tread.

Can't speak for treadlife yet since I've had the Toyos for 5k miles, but I got 65k out of my BFGs which makes the price more than worth it for the life and performance of those tires.
