Default New wheels and TPMS

I searched for the keyword TPMS and didn't find anything that answers this question, so here goes...

If I buy aftermarket wheels, will the TPMS sensors on my factory wheels transfer to the new wheels or will I need to buy new sensors for the new wheels? I have a 2010 FX4 with 20" wheels and I would like to get 18" wheels when I buy new tires.

I think the newer trucks use the TPMS that mount onto the Valve stems.

You can remove them from your old wheels and install them onto your new ones.

Or you can just go to eBay and buy some more. You can find them for around $100 a set... thats what I did so I use the factory for winter and have some BLING BLING wheels for the summer with TPMS.

Ok, cool. I didn't want the 20s when I bought the truck, but the dealer knocked the price down because he wanted to sell the truck off of the lot rather than trade another dealer. I bought my son a Focus (used) and my wife a Fusion within 6 mos of me buying my truck, so now we all have TPMS to deal with. I wasn't sure if I could swap the sensors to new wheels.

Thanks.

What size are they turtle? I have an 08 FX4 I'm putting 18in wheels on. Would I need the band style or could I use any aftermarket set at that point?

The ones I have are for the 18" rims depending on The rim I was told by a tech at tire kingdom that some aftermarket rims only take The band style. I got a guy looking at my rims in a few days I am not sure if hey wants the sensors yet.

If you wanted to just transfer your current TPMS into the new wheels you need to go to your local ford dealer and buy valve stems for them. They are just under $10 each if I remember correctly. Take them to the shop you have mount your new wheels and there is a little screw on the end of the TPMS that they undo and then screw them to the new stems in the new wheels.

If you do buy the band style like you are considering make sure who ever puts them on they put the sensor 180* from the valve stem. That is the standard mounting location so that when breaking down the tire you don't smash the sensor. Also if you do install the bands make sure any time you have tire work done you tell the shop and make sure they know it 100 times over because they will have some idiot brake one. The main reason for telling them is because they would never expect the wheel to have a band style therefore the way you brake it down for a valve mounted TPMS is right at the location for a band style TPMS to be.

Hope it all makes sense and good luck.
