Angry 2016 Lug Nuts

Just changed lug nuts on my F150 because the factory lug nuts were steel with a thin stainless steel cover pressed over the lug nut. When I tried to rotate tires using a 13/16 socket it didn't fit, nor did a 22mm socket, so I had to resort to the factory lug nut wrench instead of my electric impact wrench. I had to pound the lug wrench over the lug nuts because the lug wrench was too tight and trying to remove the lug nuts without pounding the wrench deep over the lug rounded the end of the thin SS "cover" just enough that it was even harder to get the lug wrench onto the lug nut. I can imagine getting a flat on the freeway and trying to change a tire using the factory tire changing accessories, which would likely result in language not appropriate for children or posting on line. Subsequently, I bought chrome after market lug nuts that look good and a 13/16 socket fits perfectly. Fortunately, I discovered this issue while in my shop just doing a tire rotation and not through a horrible experience out on the hiway. This was not one of Ford's better ideas.

Thanks for info. I have a '16 F-150 and I'm about to head out of town. I don't want to deal with this on the road. What brand lugnuts did you buy and local or on line? Thanks.

I bought them off eBay. I tried to research past purchases on eBay, but left out of frustration as it showed I have bought nothing on eBay. Really? I don't recall the brand. I just looked for some that appeared to be good quality with the correct threads. So far, I have had no rust and have rotated my tires a couple times with no issues with lug nuts. I seem to recall that I paid under 30 bucks for the 24.

I bought gorilla lug nuts for my 12 on amazon, price was cheap enough I thought they might be knock offs but all indications are that they're legit and they've held up for a couple years

This is not just a Ford thing btw, many manufacturers used these same BS ones.

Thanks for the responses! I'll order a set of the Gorilla lug nuts tomorrow.

The oem lug nuts didn't look like they can take many hits from a impact, so I bought a set of gorillas off of eBay about $60 shipped

Gray-f150, you are absolutely correct! As you can tell from my original post I was very disappointed in the low quality of the factory lug nuts and didn't want to find myself, or a roadside assistant, having to deal with lug nuts that could not be easily removed with the factory supplied wrench, or put back on at sufficient torque due to a thin metal "cap" over the lug nut. Not one of Ford's better ideas. Speaking of which, I have the step that is built into the trial gate and have replaced the top piece twice because it seems to catch everything that you pull out of the truck bed. It was on the truck when I bought it and have used it exactly two times. My next F150, hopefully, won't have that "feature".

Where are you located? I have black McGards I’m trying to sell on marketplace. They don’t fit my aftermarket wheels so I have to get spline drives. 64074’s and corresponding locks 24216. I’m in the gta. DM me if interested.

I no longer have this 2016 F150. I bought a new 2021 which has a good quality lug nut and is a bit different in design.
