Sound measurement app/software suggestions
Well now that my system is all in and installed I’m wondering what apps/software people use for tuning or measurements? Also suggestions on any mic’s to use? I’m not thinking anything too pricey, just an efficient way to measure and adjust my DSP-408 and sound system...

Since you have the 408, you already have the ability to do a basic/advanced tune and setup. Just use the software provided making sure you do the measurements and dial in the speaker freqs into the program. Then you can mess with setting up your EQ preference. This is where I'm at with mine and it makes a significant difference. I also downloaded REW and bought the AudioFrog UM-1 that I'll be using later on this year. However, this extra stuff is for fine tuning your system and not necessary if you are satisfied with what you did with the basic tune.

Here is why you should be using a tuning mic and REW from the beginning. These utilities are primarily used to eliminate the peaks and valleys in the frequency response of the speakers due to their environment. Even through our dsp is receiving a completely flat signal doesn't mean the speaker is outputting a nice smooth frequency response. The vehicle is a terrible environment for speakers. The environment effects the speakers output heavily in a negative way. We use a tuning mic and REW to correct for the environment FIRST. If you dont do this first, every adjustment you make is simply a shot in the dark and the speakers will never play to their full potential. EQ must be adjusted to give the speakers the best chance at performing. Here is a comparison showing my trucks left side Tweeter, Mid, and Midbass before (no EQ, just how they perform in their environment). Not very pretty. The second picture is after adjusting the DSP's EQ to optimize the speaker for the environment. The change in sound is astounding, more so than just the difference in the graphs. Once the speaker is calibrated to optimally perform in the environment, then you go in and add bass or treble according to whatever house curve you are trying to match.

is there a certain volume on the **** that the signal begins to clip or distort? I will be ordering a mic this week...

The stock head unit begins to clip at around 28. But you dont measure at or close to clipping. You take your measurements at a comfortable listening volume. I do all of my measurements at volume 20.

Man just finally putting in the delay after taking measurements, and the crossover points based on the speakers alone made a huge difference. All the sudden I have a well defined center stage that came out of nowhere lol!
my microphone will be here later this week to do some more advanced tuning, but it’s crazy what a huge difference just those few adjustments made..

This will speed up the process and take much of your guess work out of it. Make sure to take multiple measurements around your head space for each speaker and then average the results before doing any EQ'ing.
