Don't do the firmware upgrade Kenwood has for the 890, brings it up to software 1.6 rev from 1.3 It screwed up the GPS and thank God Crutchfield exchanged the unit for me. Upgraded the firmware in the Mestro at the same time and it's even better than when I installed it in April

It appeared today that my maps on the navigation somehow lost all the roads except for major roads. No side streets or anything.

So I called Kenwood up and they told me to upgrade to the latest firmware (Version 1.6). So I downloaded it and installed it in accordance with the pdf on the update webpage. Took about 10 minutes to update.

It reboots and I go to click on "view map" and the navigation freezes. Not the head unit itself...just the navigation portion of the head unit. So I reboot it again, and then I click on the "where to" icon. My saved addresses were gone (as I figured they would be) so I go to click on the address to type in an address and I get a pop-up that says "no map data available". Great.

Reinstalled the update a couple more times, and got the same results.

Called Kenwood back and they said it's a known problem that a lot of people are encountering. One tech I talked to said they're working on a new firmware to fix this "no map data available" problem and then I got disconnected when I went out to get the serial number from my truck. So I called again and got a different tech and they told me that the new firmware "might" fix it and right now the only way to fix this is to send my head unit into a service center (NY, NJ, VA or CA are all they have....nothing in the midwest). Good god I'm so frustrated right now. I really don't want to go without a stereo for a month that it's likely going to take to fix it and send back.

Anyone else have this problem here? I don't know how many people here have bought one of these new 2013 Kenwood nav units...but they did say it's kind of common in the new ones I guess.

This is what happen to me. I was told no one else was having issues with the latest firmware. Hope they get this fixed soon. as stated above I was lucky and exchanged the unit.

Yeah they made it sound like it was a pretty common issue. The lady I first talked to yesterday asked me to call back to let them know if it worked or not....like she was expecting it to screw up my head unit.

My question is....if it's causing this many people to lose their map data then why in the hell would they keep the firmware update on their website? I'm pretty pissed at Kenwood right now...I hope they come out with the new firmware that will fix this pretty soon.

Guys, I have the Kenwood DNX890HD. I had it installed. I can't say it was a professional install with leaving my ODB2 not connected but this has been resolved. The firmware has a date of may 2013 with no problems. Thanks to 12V Guy. My 890 has been great. The nav is perfect. It took some reading and learning what I could do with it. No complaints here. The IDATA guys were a little to technical for me but were helpful when I explained what had happened. I do recommend the Kenwood 890 and and 12V Guy and the folks here at F150 Forum are very helpful.

I've had mine for awhile. Just a couple of gripes:
1) No clock in the truck other than the tiny H/U. Can't believe the iData unit cannot pick it from the kenwood H/U
2) Accessing my phone capabilities is in the F-150 submenu on the 890. No way to bring it to the front screen
3) Garmin, Garmin, Garmin... why do you insist in taking me through the middle of the city when a less direct route - say the freeway - with far fewer lights and higher speeds would get me there so much quicker.
4) No ability to select component for the rear speakers - and related tuning abilities.
5) Small gripe: Need a cord to connect the iDevice
6) Garmin, Garmin, Garmin....

Interface is excellent, OBD integration is stellar. I have Accel, Boost/Vac, Intake temp, Coolant temp and in the main, RPM. I use this screen a lot.
Great fine tuning abilities, too.

I broke out my old portable Garmin GPS and bought the newer Garmin friction mount. Still had the power cable going to a cigarette lighter w/ an add-a-fuse as well. So I installed all that and now have my portable Garmin sitting in the tray in the middle of my dash. I'm not going to go a month or so (by sending it in to Kenwood) without any music in my truck. I'll wait and see if the new upcoming firmware fixes it. To be honest though....my portable Garmin looks better than the one in the Kenwood (colors are just blah on the Kenwood). Plus now I can look at my Seattle Seahawks background on the head unit...so that's a bonus.

One thing I did discover today though, if I am listening to music on my iPhone via bluetooth audio, turn the truck off to go into a store, and come back all I have to do is press play on the Kenwood (or my phone) to continue listening to my iPhone. I know before I got the Kenwood that if I did the same thing (turn the truck off and come back) that Sync would be set to "line in" and I would have to tell it to go back to bluetooth audio. Used to drive me crazy having to tell it to go back to bluetooth audio all the time.

I have the same problem with my DNX690HD. Worked fine for a month and a half, then this exact problem started happening. I haven't tried updating the firmware yet, it's at 1.3 currently.

Hi,

Here you go:

1) No clock in the truck other than the tiny H/U. Can't believe the iData unit cannot pick it from the kenwood H/U

WE CAN READ IT. It's in our serial protocol. The radio can't pass it to us. We hope Kenwood will support in future releases.

2) Accessing my phone capabilities is in the F-150 submenu on the 890. No way to bring it to the front screen

If you mean accessing the phone screen in Kenwood, try pressing the phone button on your steering wheel anytime there is no call coming in or active.

Glad you like gauges. For your info, if you use it a lot, you can assign it to a steering wheel button (say second function of Media for example) and pop it up from the steering wheel. You can then use the OK button to get back to Navi or whatever source you are listening to (OK will toggle between these).

Cheers,

12V Guy There is a way to bring the clock to the nav map. I think it's where you go to change from 2D to 3D under setup. I found it by playing with the buttons. The clock will show on the lower left hand tab. I think thats where the elevation was. I'll try to locate it and and pass it on.
