Default Transmission advice

I just purchased my first Ford F150. It is a F150 XL 4x4. I picked it up cheap due to a bad transmission (possibly). So, I am looking for advice on getting this truck on the road. I see alot of used trannys out there, and rebuild kits. Any advice? After taking care of the mechanical things, I will get into customizing my first F150.

Thanks.

Welcome to the forums..lots of good..info here.. be sure to post some pictures... if you are needs a trans i would suggest just wathcing your local salvage yard and picking one up for 200 to 400 bucks...unless you got the cash to pony up around 800-1400 for a rebuilt one

The 97-98 transmissions are unique to those years. They use different electrical connectors.

The ID tag info is completely worn off. nothing but metal. Some have told me that i have to know whether the tranny is F65P-CA or F75P-KA and others say it doesnt matter. I just need to get this thing going.

Can get the one I have rebuilt for $1000. So, I will probably just do that to get it done.

I had my 97 XLT 4x4 tranny crack last year. Could have got a rebuilt (not mine) for $800 installed at a tranny shop. Shop around (phone) if you have the time, it might save you a couple hundred. Just wondering, are there common issues with the 97 transmissions? Good luck with the rebuild.

my 98 trans went out and when the trans guy rebuilt it he found a crack in it.. he picked up another case.. and rebuilt and installed for 1100... whitch was pretty cheap becouse he said getting it out with the lift and aftermarket skid plates really took some time.. i was satisfied.. it had a 1 year unlimited miles or abuse warrenty..
