Default New in NY!

Hey all. Just picked up my first Ford ever last month and got a question!!

It's a 95 F150 XLT supercab shortbed 4x4. 351 W/BBK TWIN 61MM intake, new 31"tires on factory rims. I picked it up for next to nothing, and has almost no rust (pretty good for ny / pa truck!)

So far this is what i have done:
Exhaust (stock manifolds, and cats. Put a superturbo and dump pipe in front of the axle),
U-joints on rear shaft,
New radiator, upper hose, thermostat and housing, tensioner,
New rear fuel tank (the front one will probably be replaced in the near future!)
Idle air valve,
washer pump.

Currently is in pieces and getting:
Water pump,
Idler pulley,
timing chain,
oil pump,
rear main seal,
lower hoses,
new timing cover
allnew gaskets and seals (including oil pan.)

Here are my issues :
It runs great, has 167000 on it, does not burn a drop of anything.

The temp guage was never reading past low, hence the stat.
After that, the next day the temp guage went and pinned way past red, however the motor was not overheated. I put a 180 stat in with a new sending unit. Is this an issue with the guage? I really dont think it is overheating at all.

Also the motor was just leaking oil from just about every spot it could on the lower end, hence all the current work.

Am i beating a dead horse here?

One other question i noticed while ripping the motor apart:
The airbox had a considerable amount of oil AND antifreeze in it.
It wasn't mixed (ie there is no a/f in the oil and no oil in the cooling system), and they were seperated. I assume the oil is from blowby, but how about the antifreeze? Is it possible it came from an extremely bad leaking water outlet?

I know this is alot to chew, but i am a converting chevy guy right now and am lost in the world of Ford, and also hope to learn alot in here!

Thanks!

Do a compression test before you put the motor back together. Of course you will have to have the timing chain on it. Do a leakdown test also. The oil and antifreeze in the airbox concerns me the most.
