I've only recently started detailing when I got my truck. One thing that seems to have been skipped is use the two bucket method. I use grit guards in both pails. You don't want to be adding more swirl/scratches if you're trying to get rid of them.

My product list for the spring and fall differs a bit.

Wash:Meguires Gold Class Wash
Clay: clay bar with quik detailer/Chem. Guys Luber
Polish: green pad and Optimum Hyper Polish
Sealant:Wolfgang Deep Gloss Paint Sealant with a Black pad
Wax:Meguiars Gold Class (summer) Collinite 845 (winter)
Misc: Bumpers, grille and running boards with Mothers Chrome Polish, Black plastics with Mothers Back in Black, Tires with Duragloss 253, Tire & Rubber dressing

I use the Collinite in the winter as I've found it's more durable in terms of dealing with sand/salt in the winter. It doesn't have the deep gloss of the other waxes but in the winter I can live with that.

From this springs thorough detail.

I want to do a full paint detail on my 11’ Screw and make it shine like new again. I’m no detailing expert, cleaning my truck involves a pressure washer, Dawn dish soap, and a car wash brush. I’ve never used a clay bar before but I would like to give that a try as well as Collinite 845. From what I’ve read the general process involves:

1. Wash and Dry
2. Clay bar
3. Wash and Dry
4. Seal
5. Wax, (Collinite 845)

Basically, I’m looking for someone who is experienced in this procedure to elaborate a little on these steps, such as techniques, and recommended product brands. As a University student I don’t exactly have a lot of cash to spend on a bunch of different detailing products so I’m looking for an affordable yet effective detail job.

*I’m not familiar with sealants and how they differ from wax; I just see you must use it after the clay bar process and before the wax?

**The entire front end, mirror caps, and rear bumper is covered in 3M film, is ok to clay bar/ apply these products to it?

Thanks a lot guys. This forums the best.
Dylan.

1.I would wash it using the 2 bucket wash method. It helps keep down on swirls.
Here is a video on it.

Get a quality wash mit.

Grit guards are a good thing to have in your wash bucket. The keep all the dirt at the bottom and out of the wash mit.

A electric leaf blower is good for drying. It get the water out of all the tough spots like the door handles. I follow up with a waffle weave micro fiber cloth for touch ups. Stay away from a chamois. They can scratch.

2. I heard all the clay bars are made by the same company. When you clay be sure you use plenty of lube. You will probably use 2 or 3 bottles on your truck.

3. The only sealant I have used so far is Rejex. It makes the paint very slick. The water beads very nice with it. I think it could last a year.

5. I have never used Collinite 845 but I have heard it is very good.
A good carnuba wax is expensive and they don't last that long.

--------------------------------------------------

Since you plan on using a Sealant I would buy a polish instead of wax. I think You would get a better shine. Polish goes on before the Sealant. Check out http://www.autogeek.net/. There is a lot of good information on that site and on their forum.

I've been considering all this as well. I just washed my truck for the first time the other day (its only 2 months old). 2 bucket method with synth. wool wash pads and and quality car shampoo from chem. guys.

I have been looking at all the clay bar stuff and trying to figure it out. Since my truck is so new, do I really need the extra step of polish/sealer before the wax?

Wow, your truck looks amazing. That color is great!

After using a carwash brush and pressure washer I wouldn't bother with the two bucket system until AFTER doing the clay\polish\seal\wax But yes, two bucket with grit guards.

I wouldn't worry too much about the polish if it doesn't need it. Again, I would apply the sealant. Polish will remove swirls and light scratches from paint, sealant protects paint.

They used to come from one company that owned the patent, but it expired recently so that is no longer true.

http://www.adamspolishes.com/p-1004-...-clay-bar.aspx

Why do we call it Adam's MADE IN THE USA Detail Clay? For the better part of the past 7 years clay in the US was under the control of a patent which limited the production, sourcing, and sales of all detail clay. With the expiration of this patent earlier this year Adam's was once again able to formulate our own clay bars and make sure that not only the components, but the packaging, and even the label were made right here in the USA.

Gotcha, makes sense now that I read it. Polish for removal of scratches sealant to keep it nice. Thanks!
