You should have used a lubricant of some kind. Like Spray Way Glass cleaner. The rust is not going to happen that fast to the steel wool. I sometimes use a white scuff pad. After using wet, steel wool, throw it away.

Yes this! Invisible Glass. Also, it is safe for window tint.
