Default Wiring help PLEASE!

i know there are probably about a couple hundred threads out there but I'm too PO'd right now to look. Turns out my arthritic old bones and joints won't allow my to work under a dashboard anymore.
Im trying to wire up lighting for a boost gauge and I just can't manipulate myself to the pass side fuse box. Is there anywhere I can get power to 2 wires under the hood somewhere. I'm not all that electrically inclined and would rather not burn my truck to the ground. I need one constant 12v ( rather NOT go to battery ) and one switched 12v!
'13 XLT EB, if that matters!
Any help would be greatly appreciated! I'd rather not have to pay someone to do this easy task!
Thanks guys!

Just had a brainstorm!!!!! I'm running 18ga wire like the gauge instructions call for. What about the harness that runs under the sill plate in the drivers door jamb? Guess I could pick up a cheap probe tester and see what's constant hot ( if anything ) and what it switched. Ideas???

You don't want to go just probing wires with a cheap tester, you could fry sensitive electronics (expensive) Get one that is computer safe.

thanks! I know you told me which wire to tap at the headlight switch but I'm thinking that was for the dimmer function. I have it written down somewhere in my tool box. Do you remember if the wire you told me about was for dimmer function or just switched power? Seems like the simple tasks are always the ones I tend to have trouble with. Especially with electrical.

Look up your wiring here:
http://www.bbbind.com/free_tsb.html
You don't have to use your real e-mail, but switch to WIRING DIAGRAMS when you see that button.

Why are you trying to run gauge backlighting wires under the hood? Will the gauge be mounted under the hood? The best place to splice in for backlighting is anywhere on the dash backlighting circuit. The best place to get switched power is at the dash fuse block. Tap the same fuse that powers the stock gauges.

The reason I wanted to look for a place to tie in under the hood is that I'm very arthritic and cannot move around well down by the passenger footwell fuse panel. I tried today and actually got myself wedged in down there and had to get help to get out. I think I'll try to just run the switched power to the headlight switch like suggested by Rnlcomp because I can do that without contorting myself too much. Maybe for constant hot, I'll just go to the battery and fuse it! I don't know, just frustrating that this simple task is becoming difficult for me.

I'm sorry if I'm asking too many questions or sounding stoooopid! So, that wire that controls "backlighting" would be my switched 12v ?????

Back lighting is just what it sounds like, it's the same line that powers the back lighting to your gauges and all other lights that dim with the panel rocker switch. That way when your gauges and what not dim at night so will your new gauge(s) provided as I mentioned before they are led, if they are not led then do not connect to that circuit.

Thank You again Rnlcomp! Yes the new gauge is LED backlit. I'll hook it up tomorrow and keep you posted!
