To answer your question,
Nikon D300 with nikkor 18x200 lens as my general carry all.

However, stepping beyond your question, you should consider what you will do with the camera, what kind of shots, and what you like or don't like in a camera, etc. for example, my wife loves a nice point and shoot. Small, simple on, point push shutter trigger. Done.
I however love to play. Longer shutter speed, shorter speed, aperture settings, multiple exposures, etc etc. My wife's camera is tiny, fits in her purse easily, and is very light. Mine is big like a 35mm film, big heavy lens, and awkward to carry, I would not trade for the world!
I can take 8 photos a second. Have huge storage, can take wonderful shots. My wife could care less about the details!!! Lol! Point and shoot, great pics!

Now days any major brand camera is likely fine for most.

Cannon is great. Also tends to be popular with technical minds.
Nikon is great. Also tends to be popular with a more artistic mind.

I work in an extremely technical world yet I love my Nikon !go figure!

If I were you, decide what you want the camera for first, then decide on features, then cost, then one or two will jump out at you! If you want a higher end camera in the use base you select, do not be afraid of last years model, you can save a bundle.

This is a good description of differences in choices. I have seen a few people with the GoPro. What do you think about that one? I like it and I want it. It does awesome video and photos.
I'm technical also but not in the camera world.

I use the iPhone so much more than the big camera since its always on me and handy, but the Nikon can do things my phone can't.

Never been a fan of instagram, especially when people claim to be photographer lol I use it mainly for pictures of my truck.
But you have some pretty good looking pics

Lol yeah it's kinda stupid sometimes, but it can really make some nice pics stand out. I like looking at all the truck stuff on there. Mine is 90% my trucks and truck related things.

I love my go pro. I hang it off the Harley and sometimes on the windshield for car shows, however when I want photos I do not consider the Gopro.

The the dedicated nikon d300 is my choice!

haha thanks. I actually got rid of it for my f150. Needed something a little more practical at the moment. House shopping is taking precedence.

Even made it in diesel world mag when I was at diesel nationals 2 years ago
