Updating Sync - Worth it?
Hi all,
I just got my F-150 last week - a 2018 Supercrew Lariat 5.0 FX4, and I've been doing the usual post-purchase maintenance and Forscan customizations.
One thing I haven't been able to find much info on is the difference between Sync 3 software versions. The truck has Sync 3rd generation, but is on software version 2.3 Build 17109. Its been working just fine for me so far. I'd like to upgrade to USB-C, which I understand requires a newer software revision.
From what I have been able to find, we're on Sync 3.4+ these days. What I can't find is a changelog. What's different between the Sync software versions? How do I know if I should upgrade without a changelog?
Any info appreciated. I don't know much about Sync so I'm looking forward to learning. Thanks!

I believe the last available updates for the maps is dated 2021. Otherwise... yes its worth it if you use the navigation.

Sync 3.4 looks totally different than 2.3, but, tbh, the only thing I gave a crap about was Apple CarPlay when I upgraded my 2014 from the old sync 2 system to sync 3. I was never super impressed with sync 3 itself. I actually thought sync 2 was better, other than just being laggy and slow.
Just be aware, after a certain version of sync, you cannot go back, I believe it is 3.1 and greater forces you to never be able to revert back to pre-3.1. So just make sure you wanna do it.
Cyanlabs Updater is definitely the best way to actually do the upgrade. It correctly formats the usb drive so that it is recognized by the truck and properly updates.

Wow, I had no idea it would be so easy.
Like you said - an hour of my life and now I'm running the latest v3.4. Used the cyan labs updater, followed the instructions, and it went totally without a hitch. I also have nav.
Thanks all!

The updating sounds more difficult/involved than it is.
is it possible to update it using a phone hotspot through the screen itself or I must download the cyanlabs and do the flashdrive process? I am new to Ford in general but I think there's an auto update function through wifi there?

I tried to go the the latest 3.4 version of 23188 I think it is, and after putting the usb stick in my truck, after 2 hours of it showing a "updating software" at the top like normal, I gave up. I know what I am doing as I upgraded the 4" sync to the 8" Sync3 last year. I have no clue why it didn't work. Tired it twice actually. Not sure what I did wrong. Tried a master reset, put the usb stick back in and same thing.

I’d go through the entire process from the very beginning and be certain the original settings you input to CyanLabs are correct.
I recently updated my 2018 F150 from 3.0 to 3.4 and it was definitely worth it. I really like the color scheme and the "darker scheme" at night. That darker blue is much calmer then what was previously there. Surprisingly it is also much faster. Maybe it is just because it is a fresh install, but it does seem quicker.
I also was able to install an updated USB module in my truck to have a USBC to USBC for my phones.
I did make a video on doing the install with CyanLabs. I'm very happy I made the update to my truck.
