Default transmission problem

Hello everybody i have a 98 F150 4.6L 4WD automatic and im having problems with the transmission the truck runs fine in the city but it does have a little jump from 1 to 2 but barely noticable, after 2nd the gears go in smoothly going on the freeway the truck works great. its when i exit the freeway that the problem starts every gear it feels like somebody hits you from behind, but if you turn off the truck and turn it back on it works fine again. im pretty sure its something simple but everywhere ive gone they tell me i need a new tranny. have any of you guys ever had this problem before

It could be the torque converter going bad.

Since it is a 98 and you have to pull the tranny to install a torq convertor I would freshen up the tranny.

damn the torque converter thats sounds expensive already. I thought it would be something electrical. because when its starts shifting hard all i do is is turn it off and turn it back on and it works good after that. im pretty sure the tranny is good because the previous owner replaced it. i just cant remember how many miles ago he did all his work at the dealer is there any way to find out when he replaced it by calling the dealer.

The dealer should be able to look it up. If done by the dealer, its part of the trucks' maintenance record.

convertors typically go for about 200-250 before the core charge.

Big WAG - converter lock-up engaging at wrong times?

If so, is it doing this on its own, or being told to?

Maybe de-select overdrive to see if anything changes.

okay ill try to take the overdrive off tomorow when i go to work. But yeah it does this on its own especially when getting of the freeway the transmission starts shifting really rough but as soon as you turn the truck off and turn back on again it fixes the problem. But the RPMs only drop when put into reverse
