Default Transmission issue

I am new to the "F" word. FORD!!! I recently purchased an 88 f150 4x4 with an auto tranny. The other day after getting home I parked outback and later went to move rig in drive and wouldnt go into gear then all of a sudden it went in gear and moved in driveway. The next day went to back out and once again wouldnt go into gear. Not sure where to start looking???? Engaging one time and not the next. Oh, and before this happened the first time all the runs I have made in the truck, the tranny seemed to shift smoothly and properly. Just not sure if I get it in gear again if should drive to tranny shop or tow ?

Thanks

You can start by looking at the fluid level, and the color and condition of the fluid. Changing the fluid and filter is also a good idea.
