Trans problem
When I had my '95 with 5 speed I had this same issue. It was the clutch slave cylinder. It had to be replaced twice in 60k miles.
The problem is the transmission has to be pulled back to replace it so it's quite a job.

Be sure to check and remove the black rubber cover on the slave cylinder when you add fluid. I didn't know (my 1991) it had a rubber cover after you remove the fill cap until I read about it on this F150 forum
. My fluid level was still good after removing the black rubber cover, I got lucky

You can get the top cover off really easily (I think, I've only done them in the wrecking yards) and take a look. It's just a bunch of screws and bolts that you have to remove then it lifts off. Take the shifter off, see what you see, then keep going if you need to. Sounds like something is worn or broken. It will probably be obvious.
If the forks aren't cracked and the shifter isn't sloppy, not being able to put it into gear is going to be bad synchros.
One suddenly going from shifting fine to not is almost always a broken fork.
Can you trust the previous owner? I'm betting he already had issues with the gears on one of the forks, and "suddenly" lost the others when the second fork broke.
