I just recently upgraded to my 2012 5.0 from a 2002 Tundra 4.7 that would consistently get between 6.5 and 8mpg. I was over the moon at 10-11mpg with the 5.0

This isn't really an accurate statement. Aerodynamic drag is a much larger source of resistance than the force of gravity, particularly on a boxy truck.

And it is accentuated by towing a boxy trailer behind the truck. For example, this weekend I towed a 20 ft, 8' tall enclosed trailer about 1500 miles. Half of the trip, the trailer weight was about 7000 lbs. The other half, returning unloaded, it weighed 3900. I got nearly the same mileage both ways.
