Default RPM drop

At idle my 4.2, 2000 truck suddenly drops from 1,000rpm to about 700. The engine begins to run rough. Add throttle and the engine smooths out. 150,000 miles and intend to keep it running. What kind of problem usually produces this response? Thanks for indulging us old guys.

How are your air filter, plugs, fuel filter, general maintance type stuffy??? This is where I would start along with pulling the battery cable to try for a restart on that puter...
