Default R12 AC system

I have a 92 s10 blazer and need to recharge the AC before summer hits. Is it possible for me to do the recharge myself? I don't think there is any r12 in it right now. So basically my question is does anyone know where I can buy some r12 and can I put it in myself? Anyone done this before?

R 12 will be a hard gas to find now. It was phased out some years ago. I have seen it around in 12oz cans but cost over $20/can. Most auto A/C systems took about 4 to 5 cans to fill them up. I have heard of owners putting in 134A in their cars and worked. Just don't mix the two. 134A really needs alkabenzel compressor oil for it to work right.

R12 is going for around $45 a pound right now if you can find it. Just convert it over, I do it all the time. You dont need a new compressor, but you do need to replaced the receiver/dryer and update the fittings. The new system will require less refrigerant than the old so install 80% of the amount of whatever the system is required to take.
