I have a plastic drop in, My truck came like that so no reason to spend the money to change it. I like the appearance of a spray in a lot better but its just worth the price. If I had no liner at all and had to buy something I'd prob do spray.

I would think the kayak would fair better with plastic

Yeah the kayak was my main concern. The Linex felt pretty abrasive when I went down to check it out.

What grit sandpaper do you guys recommend for smoothing out that peeling paint shown in the original post? I got some Rust Oleum clear that I'm going to spray over before putting the liner in.

depends on how you want it to look. If there is loose paint around the edges, start with 80 to knock it off, the switch up to 120 to knock down the 80 grooves, then switch to 220 wet sand. As long as you dont break through to bare metal, then go ahead and hit it with the clear, but if you do see metal, put some primer-sealer on then your top coat.

Primer-sealer can be applied over bare metal and then top coated, sandable sealer should be applied over etching primer if on bare metal for a good bond, but only if you are looking to level the surface, block sand, and then seal for a visible panel. So in your case since you just want to protect from rust and hiding it, get some primer-sealer, and getrdone.

Paint/primers are compromises on both. I would sand with 220 and use a good automotive primer, and paint it with enamel spray. Color match wouldn't matter if you are covering it. Primer is what sticks and the paint protects the primer, shortcuts seldom work well.

I have a sea kayak but it's plastic. I got plastic so I don't have to worry about it, our beaches are rough and I run right up over rocks and barnacles.

I had a plastic liner in a Ranger, hated it. Tap your brakes and everything in the bed slams the cab. Got the Line X when I got the F150 and like having stuff stay put.

I wonder if there is a non-slip coating for plastic?

Yep, you could spray some Line-X right over top of the drop in liner....

Isn't that like putting a condom over a condom? I'd just go with the Linex.

I got a fitted rubber mat, prefer that over the drop in.
I would like the Line-x but the mat was less than $100. Don't use the bed often for what line-x would protect from vs mat. So the mat won.

In a previous life, I sold AllStar and Duraliner drop in liners. THOUSANDS of them. I have never seen a drop in liner cause a rust issue. I have seen nearly rusted out beds made useful again by the addition of a drop in liner. Spray in liners can look nicer but quite frankly nobody looks, but if the owner is happy.... Spray in liners simply aren't capable of protecting like a drop in. You can hit an installed drop in with a sledge hammer and the bed will suffer no damage. Try that with a Linex.

OP, gently scuff the loose paint and clear if you want but if I remember correctly those metal surfaces are galvanized?
I'd simply clean the bed lightly and put the liner in.
You'll have no issues.
This is one of those "problems" that's not a problem.

My truck came with the drop in. I got a cap and store stufff inside year around from hunting and fishing.

To combat stuff sliding around, i got the rubber mat by the foot from tractor supply. Its 4' wide, what ever length you want and was like 6 bucks a foot. So 36 bucks got me a rubber mat to put ontop of my drop in to stop stuff from sliding around.

This is the mat (hope linking is ok) https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/pr...t?cm_vc=-10005
