Default Oil question?

Hey, im new here. I have a 2014 XLT 5.0 V8 crewcab 4x4 (33,200 miles bought it with just under 30k).

I have been using full synthetic in my vehicles for years, i would buy what was on sale between the 18-24 dollar per 5 qt range (Quaker State, Valvoline, Pennzoil etc). I have been using Napa filters for a few years now. This is my first truck and i love it and i plan on keeping it as long as possible and would like to take care of it the best i possibly can.

So i have a few questions...

I googled what people with f150s use for oil and i got alot of mixed answers, it seemed like alot of people use the motorcraft oil and filter. Then alot of answers with the other name brands (mobil1, castrol and the ones mentioned above) and stuff like Royal Purple (which is out of my price range).

So my questions are, what kind of oil and oil filter is best to use on this engine and will any kind of oil or filter void my warranties?

I apologize if this is a stupid question but im trying to change my oil this saturday and thought id get some opinions.

I've always used Mobil1 full synthetic and Fram Extra Guard oil filter, I've never had an issue. Same with my step dad and a few buddies. Since I bought my F150, I started using the Motorcraft oil filter and will probably stick with that, but I'll continue to use Mobil1 full synthetic. I would just make sure you stay with the manufacturer oil weight (mine is 5w-20) and you'll be fine.

There are oil forums and people who run oil for extended times then pay to have oil tested. From my reading over the years mobil 1 full holds up best. So that's what I use in everything. Any decent oil filter (fram Napa mobil1 or motorcraft) only way a filter will affect a warranty is if the filter fails or is installed improperly

What you Googled is exactly what you'll get for answers. Every kind of filter, every kind of oil. Becomes sort of useless.

No matter brand of filter you use, or brand of oil, as long as they both meet specs you cannot void your warranty. In fact, nothing you use voids your warranty - Ford has to prove that a failure of something was caused by a part.

Many talk about the Motorcraft filter's anti-drainback valve.

I recommend a Fumoto valve for easy oil changes. Also read about how when you do the filter you should put a bag around it and then unscrew it. Otherwise, you get flow out the back and the front of the area, making a mess (or put down two oil catch pans).

Once you change the oil, reset the Intelligent Oil Life Monitor. It will tell you when the next change is needed, which will be within a year, or 10,000 miles (if less than a year), or when it is needed as determined by the IOLM (if less than a year or less than 10,000 miles).

I'm an idiot. How did I not think about putting a bag around the filter to catch the oil? I just kept stuffing paper towels under the filter hoping to catch the excess oil (never works, always came out both ends). Well I guess I'll have to try the bag trick next time.

Thanks Rick!

I just changed my 5.0 with mobil1 and motorcraft filter. I'm afraid a different filter wouldn't work right or possibly restrict flow. I don't want to worry about it and motorcraft is what they recommend anyway.

I can't take credit for the idea, others posted it. In fact, when I did my oil change a few months back, I zoned out and forgot about it. I did put two pans down, and oil came out front and back (mostly back). Then, despite heavy wiping of the area I still got a few drips. Next time I hope to remember the bag...

THIS!!!!

I took mine to a dealer for it's first change. But I will definitely be using the bag when I change it from now on.

I use Motorcraft because of the filter's anti-drainback valve (and the filters are very affordable) and Pennzoil Platinum full synthetic because again it is affordable and is a great oil. Always stick with full synthetic, synthetic means more than just long lasting oil.

I've been using the Motorcraft Synthetic Blend with a Motorcraft filter on each of my last 3 trucks with great results. I've been on the 5 to 6K oil change schedule so every oil change I get the tires rotated also. I've used Mobil One in the past but I don't find it any better then the Motorcraft Oil. As long as the viscosity doesn't break down or you get any contaminant's in the oil...5 to 6K miles is easy for todays oils. Ford recommends Motorcraft Oil so why not use it?
