You're thinking of the HDPP not Max Tow Package on the frame thickness IIRC!!

I agree we can’t make a decision on max tow without a picture of OP’s wife.

Correct. frame thicknesses are pretty much the same on 3.5 and 5.0 maybe even the diesel regardless if it is max tow or not. The 2.7 has a lighter frame, and hdpp the heavier frame.

There were three frame rail thickness specs--LD, HD, HPP--for the 2018 MY: 0.087", 0.10", and 0.11". In addition to the HDPP trucks, the only models to get the HPP frame were the 157" WB 4x2 and 4x4 Supercrews.

I don't know if the specs changed for 2019.

Good find, the LD is for the 2.7 and the HD the others. I think if you ordered the 2.7 payload package they used the HD frame.

The diesel also comes on the light frame. All long wheelbase trucks are on the medium frame or hdpp frame. The 2.7 payload package was just a long wheelbase 2.7 which meant it was on the medium frame. Diesel is the same short wheelbase is light frame.

You have to also keep in mind the frontal areas of the RV and the kayaks on the roof. Ford states that increased aerodynamic drag reduces the truck's towing capacity. Think of the palm of your hand facing the wind out the window at highway speed.

A 4x4 configured like this has around 1850 pounds of payload and still some decent creature comforts. Max tow is also an extremely economical package. You get the 36 gallon tank, trailer brake controller, and 3.55 e-locker in addition to the upgraded stuff you get in the tow package. All of these things are things you want if you are towing add up to a lot of money saved when buying the package.

Example below (modify to your use case):

Truck Available payload: 1850 pounds

Trailer tongue weight: 800 pounds
Spray in bedliner: 50 pounds
Light weight Bed cover: 50 pounds
Driver: 200 pounds
Wife: 150 pounds
Kayaks on roof 200 pounds
Camping gear in bed 300 pounds
Medium dog 80 pounds

Total Payload needs : 1830 pounds
Available Payload left : 20 pounds
You really need the HDPP if you want to maximize tow capacity. The first number to get blown out with a bigger trailer and load is the payload. The HDPP with a loaded XLT is around 2450 to 2500 lbs.

If you want a work truck, you get a 157" XL HDPP MT with all options except subwoofer. About any of the new F150's can handle 6000 pounds gross weight towing.
