Low Torque Gears
Hey yall i want to put some low torque gears in my truck. want a little power cant blame me any ideas which would be alright. dont want to over do it though. And does low torque gears affect your mpg
Whatsup Brogan?
Nice move on decidig to move up to higher gears. If I had the money, I would def do the same. Couple of questions first for you;
1.What do you currenty have right now...the 3.55? You could move to the 3.73 but I'm not sure how much of a difference you would notice but I know that you said that you "don't want to overdue it". Come on! Stop lying to yourself...YOU KNOW that you want your brain to slam into the headrest when you hit the accelerator! LOL, just kidding...maybe that's just me
2.Do you plan on putting a lift or larger tires onto your truck, or are you just doing a straight gear mod upgrade by themsleves?
3. Is this your daily driver and will it be used mainly on-road or will you be off-roading w/it as well, and if so, how much do you think you will be doing this?
To really "feel" it, I'm guessing (I AM ONLY GUESSING here) that you would probably want to dabble with either the 4.56 or 4.88 gears which will definately make it feel as though you have more power via increasing your low end torque. I still consider myself a newbie here, so I would wait for some of the more Einsteins to drop in before listening to my half wit brain.
As for you mpg, I have read that going up in gears can effect you mpg both ways...that it will make them drop or that it will increase them. I honestely am not sure.
From the 4wheelpats.com gear ratio guide looks like you will be turning a touch more RPM's, so your probably gonna loose some gas mileage BUT I have also read that;
You may probably notice an increase in mileage due to the new gears allowing the engine to turn the tires easier, therefore less strain on the engine.
So I am at a loss, and am just as interested in an answer as you are. Sorry that I couldn't be more helpful...

yea my truck is sitting on 33's and yes im planning on lifting it. and i use to go off road a lot but not so much now a days but yes i prolly will sooner or later but thanks for the tips
Have you thought about installing an axillary transmission. with a 2 or three speed unit you can have your cake and get the gas mileage too.
