I keep a 2" ball hitch in my truck underneath the rear seat. Not sure its a necessity, but makes no sense to keep it in the house.

I have a fire extinguisher, tow strap, bungees, ratcheting tie downs, zip ties, paper towels, pliers, channel locks, a couple screw drivers, spare fuses jumper cables, a pair of leather gloves and I know I am missing a couple things. Once winter comes I throw in an extra coat and snow scraper/brush.

those are most useful when kept in a hitch located on the rear bumper

Only problem with keeping it on the bumper is everyone asking you to help them move. I keep mine under the seat just in case.

in the good ol' tool box, i got a fire extinguisher on each side(in the area that sits on the bedrails), 2 flashlights, flashlight in the glove bocks, roll o' shop towels, the old serp belt from when i replaced it, basic tools, power drill (got a 14 volt to keep in the truck, keep the big kit in the garage), bungees, air compressor, ps fluid, wd40, duct tape, first aid kit, fuse kit, tow chain, jumper cables, and a lighter.

behind the seat i have a little box with a few granola bars and some water.
