How long for plates?
About 4-6 weeks in ga. Dealer turns your info over to dmv, then you get a letter from the dealer stating that your registration has been accepted, and you need to take your *** to what ever county it is registered in and pick up plate, or decal for an old plate.
In live in good ole "Corporate" Delaware. Sales Tax on new or used vehicles is 3.75% right off the bat. Then there is a title, registration, and tag fee charged by the state, plus any document/administrative fees that the dealer may charge. With a new vehicle you usually pay the dealer, and they handle everything. You'll get a 90 day T-tag. New vehicles start with five year tags. The dealer will call you after they register the vehicle. Then you go pick up your tags from them. Time frame depends on how quick the dealer gets it done. But in my experience that's usually about a month. But it has to be done within the 90 days otherwise. After the initial five year tags run out, You then have to renew your tags. The vehicle has to go thru the lanes to be inspected. You renew the tags for two years. I've heard somewhere that newer vehicles can tag for three years. But I can't say for sure. If you buy a used vehicle, it depends on where you buy it. Usually, when buying a used vehicle from a dealer, they will still handle the paper work and tags. If it's a Delaware vehicle with current tags, the dealer will give you T-tags. They call you after they have the title, registration and tags transferred to you. Then you go pick them up. You run on the current tags till they run out. Then you run the vehicle thru inspection and renew your own tags. If you've financed it I think the finance company holds title till you've paid it off. Or if it's a "Buy here, Pay here" dealer they will hold title. If the plates are not current, or if it is an out of state vehicle, the vehicle has to be run thru the inspection lanes. So, all told, Five years for new, then for two years after that, possibly three for newer vehicles.

Here in Ontario, most "Driver and Vehicle Licensing" offices are even open on saturdays. Granted, only from 09:00-14:00 or something, and busier than a disney land theme park.
