Ford F150 Sunroof Track - Known Defective Part & Safety Issue
#21
It's another day, and still no call back from Ford Customer Service regarding my truck. The Indians that took my initial call could not explain why my "escalated case" has not received any attention. But, they did tell me that I should receive a call on Monday. So much for the 1 Business Day promise for a call back.
I have told my mechanic to go ahead and move forward with the $2,500 repair of the sunroof. This is one of the worst auto service experiences I have ever had. It would be the worst if I didn't own a Ford Explorer previously and the tire exploded on the 405 Freeway in SoCal nearly killing me as I veered across multiple lanes to the shoulder without control. Early that day I was at the Huntington Beach Ford dealership who assured me with a bulge where the thread meets the sidewall that I was alright to drive it and 2 weeks back on the list for new tires.

I have given my mechanic the go ahead to order the parts and get to fixing it. $2,500 good bye. I can't be without my truck next week as my wife is busy and will need her car. I have already put her out for over a week now.
In retrospect, I should have been incredibly insistent when the sunroof was acting up 1.5 years ago. I should have also looked up the tips on silicon lubricant for the seals as the sticking on the seals is one of the theories on why the plastic parts get stressed and break.

Yet another day. No call back from Ford Corporate. Again, I was promised a (1) business day response from their Indian customer service call center. I did receive an email (rate us) response from the dealership, Theodore Robbins Ford in Costa Mesa, and well I responded, but I don't think they will like reading it.

I have been complaining about this sunroof and it's bad operation, plastic parts coming out, and noises it makes for over 1.5 years. I am an idiot for not pushing the point when it was under full warranty, but the dealership acted like it was no big deal. Still, my bad, I should have known better.
I'll update this again as the story unfolds.

Ford corporate customer service called me today. They said that since I have taken it to a 3rd Party, that they cannot help me with the costs. Apparently, they would have helped with the $2,500 bill, if I had left it at a Ford Dealership. They also told me the dealership claimed I had only brought the truck into to them once for an oil change, which is not true. I have only brought it to that dealership and on a regular basis for all maintenance. So, they offered me an extended warranty, but they couldn't say how long and for what until Wednesday (today is Monday). I assume they have to talk to a boss? Anyways, if they offer me something significant on the warranty and not just a drive train or something limited, it may ease the pain. But, if I am offered only a one year limited, then I am not going to take it on principle.

If it's just the track it's a $145 part from sunroofdr. Do it yourself and save $1000..............
For the intall says you don't need to remove headliner even.

So I have a question for you guys and gals who have had this issue. How often have you opened your sunroof? Just tilted it or actually opened? I have the same roof on my 2018 XLT but don't open it. Occasionally tilt it. Seals make some noise opening but nothing like the sounds I heard a friend's 2014 platinum did when he opened his sunroof and it failed. I have the powered back window as well so to me it seems kind of redundant to have both. Don't open it much either. Usually just clear out a lot of heat quickly then close it again.
I'm wondering if there's a correlational to the number of times opened to failure rates.
Thx

Sunroof Insert - $1,255
Motors (2) - $587
Labor - $600
Tax - 152 (California - So I likely get hosed here too.)
The entire insert gets replaced when the cables snap. You have to buy the motors too! There were many more broken plastic parts.
image of the snapped cable. They won't just sell you the cable.
Ford Corporate is supposed to call me back tomorrow.

Glad you got it fixed, but that's steep for the costs of that. That's half the value of my truck, haha.
