Ford F150 Sunroof Track - Known Defective Part & Safety Issue
Mine like 1 in every 5 Ford F150s is cracked. Ford has known this is an issue for over 10 years and dealers keep the $1,200 part on hand. I just took mine into Germain Ford to have it looked at. I BABY this truck.Here's the pièce de ré·sis·tance... I get confirmation from Gemain Ford that my sunroof is leaking (thanks) and it's a cracked sunroof track that can be replaced for $2,000 parts and labor. Next they bring my truck around fresh out of the car wash. Oy vey! How about putting more water into my dash airbags so they fail in an accident?! As well, I look on the roof and there are chips from where they popped the sunroof out. Not happy and the truck could cause a death from faulty airbags from the water that is getting piped down from the sunroof into the dash.

I had my sunroof track replaced two weeks ago and my dealer charged me $100 plus tax for the part and labor. The MSRP on the frame is $1123 and about 8 hours labor to change it out.
It was covered under TSB AWI-32166. The truck 82000 mi on it and is a 2013 model, no extended warranty. |
My F150 is a black 2012 FX4 SCREW w/ around 60k on it.

Dealer just told me TSB are not covered after 3 year warranty is up

I am in the process of doing mine in my 2006, it's about $100 in parts to replace the track if you do it yourself. Plenty of video's and articles online about how to do it. |

My F-150 is a 2016 (original owner) and the plastic parts inside cracked and broke. I have been complaining about the noises and the clicking it makes to the dealership. Now that it is out of warranty, they tell me the fix is $1,200+. So, I took it to my sunroof guy. When he took it apart, you have to remove the windshield and headliner, he said the cable is snapped on one side, the plastic parts are destroyed on both sides. I went in and took pictures of it all. He's right. Ford wants over $1K for the sunroof parts and over $300 for each motor. They won't sell the cables and parts separately. There is labor as well, which will run another $700 - $900. In total, it will cost approximately $2,500. I have called Ford Customer Service (India) and have a case number. We'll see if they take care of me or not. I believe many people are going to have these problems with this sunroof for years to come as the plastic parts will not hold up.
I grew up with a 1970 F-100 that we made into a bad ass drag truck. I am a survivor of the exploding Explorer Firestone tires. I almost died on the 405 / 55 freeway connection in SoCal. I forgave Ford. This might put me over the edge as a Ford customer. So I have a question for you guys and gals who have had this issue. How often have you opened your sunroof? Just tilted it or actually opened? I have the same roof on my 2018 XLT but don't open it. Occasionally tilt it. Seals make some noise opening but nothing like the sounds I heard a friend's 2014 platinum did when he opened his sunroof and it failed. I have the powered back window as well so to me it seems kind of redundant to have both. Don't open it much either. Usually just clear out a lot of heat quickly then close it again.
I'm wondering if there's a correlational to the number of times opened to failure rates. Thx |
