Problem is that it isn't a truly free market, and hasn't been since the abuses of the robber barons in the late 1800s. Controls were placed on businesses for a reason....
Though the current crop of CEOs (particularly in the tech sector) make the railroad barons look like choirboys. A truly free market lends itself to abuses of different sorts.

The abuses come with the territory. That is the price of liberty; eternal vigilance. Leave people to their automony, liberty, rights, and all would be fine as long as each person does not use threat or force on another. The government is notorious for threat and force.
Such controls were emplaced because of the same crap going on now, knee jerk emotional reactions and outcry rather than cognizance.

I actually had someone ask me about that at work the other day...a whole month late to the party. I think my expression showed how interested I was in what he had to say...lol

I'm not sure I understand what you are saying. What I'm getting at is I don't think it's smart to brag on cheaper to repair when it's less safe. I don't know many ppl who would take that into consideration when their insurance co is going to be the one footing the repair bill anyway.

I think politics are somewhat relevant to this thread. The issue is that GM didn't innovate and to a large extent that has continued today. Their trucks are heavier, less safe, and do not perform as well as the F-150. GM does have the 6.2 which makes up for performance but you will take a hit with fuel economy and upfront cost (I haven't seen a 6.2 Silverado or Sierra for less than 50k).
In the grand scheme of things, the bed strength is really a minor issue that is easily remedied.

I get that, but if crash standard testing numbers back up that ford performs better in a crash test, I was saying that it wouldn't be wise to point out repairs were cheaper, even tho the truck wasn't as safe, which was the rebuttal you figured GM to make.
