Default Flywheel vs Fixplate

Mechanic says that my Flywheel/Fixplate (2005 Auto F150 4x4) needs replacing...not sure if I completely believe this...its been rattling in the front end like a bunch of empty soda cans...the noise is bearable in drive, silent in neutral and very loud in reverse...any ideas?

Its called a flywheel flexplate, yes they crack where they attach to crankshaft and will cause all sorts of noises. Eventually it will destroy itself and be a no go. Tranny hase to be removed to replace.

I've heard that the part is ~$100 but the labor is ~$400+; is that reasonable?

flywheel is a generic term. but flywheel is usually associated with manual transmissions and a flex plate is associated with automatics.

but yes i had one crack from bolt tole to bolt hole and would have a good tick when running under a load or acceleration.

to put in they have to pull the trans back a few inches if it is a 4wd there is a little more work.

I have seen it only a couple of times and those were doing engine changes that the defective part was found.

THIS JUST IN...Mechanic says, "its totally warped to hell..." and the part is WEEKS beyond back ordering direct from Ford. My brother is trying to locate one through Summit.com. Any other reputable parts companies you'd recommend?

Don't normally recommend other that Ford, in this case, try NAPA. Tend to think they're better than others. Did mechanic offer up any ideas why it warped, thats a new one on me? Hopeing for right answer.
