Well, he did uncouple the trailer and rolled it into the water. This is the part that sobriety could have prevented. He took us for a spin that afternoon and couldn't get much speed out of it. He had a 200 hp Mariner engine, and we thought it should have had more snap. We went to the transom and removed the cover off the outboard to check for any obvious defects. Looking into the water, I quickly discovered something that looked like a license plate.

Well I'll be damned! It was! Idiot didn't even unstrap the boat from the trailer! Which at this point I suppose was a good thing! A mile and a half from shore and we are still toting the trailer under the boat.

Since then, I choose to associate with brighter people.

I fully agree with that ! Ive seen winches and cables break as well as chains. Whatever they hit when they snap is gonna get hurt. Your lucky if its just a dent in your hood or a cracked grill. I have seen chains go all the way through the windshield and end up injuring the driver. I have never seen it but i have been told several times while operating a tow truck if a winch cable snaps under load it is possible to cut a person completely in half. I don't know how true that statement is but i sure as hell don't want to find out the hard way. All those people standing around should have cleared out of the area and watched from a safer distance. I know you can't always control the crowd and the "rubber neckers" but a weight bag should have been used, If you have nothing else i have used a T-shirt or jacket to help weight the cable.

I know its been said the guy that owns this truck is on the forum and if he sees my prior post and this one there are no hard feelings meant! I would just like to see a little more safety practice used and hope he never gets stuck in this situation again, but if he does maybe reading our posts will help keep him and his friends a little safer !

I have seen pictures of a tow hook snapping off while a truck was being winched on and the hook and cable came flying backwards and went through the windshield and then completely THROUGH the drivers seat. fortunately the driver was using a remote and was standing next to the truck.

when winching a vehicle I will even open the hood on the vehicle doing the winching just for that extra layer of protection. it wont do much but it may deflect the blow away from my head.

Mythbusters disproved that theory of cutting a person in half by using a pig. It will bruise you up, maybe break the skin, cuncussion, lose an eye, etc., but won't cut you in half.

Doesn't mean it can't still kill you. Break some ribs and pierce a lung out in the middle of no where, get some internal bleeding and it just might be the end of you. Not to mention if the cable wraps around your neck. There's a reason Warn publishes safety procedures for using their winches, I would believe they would know the inherent dangers of winch use and malfunctions.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but being on dirt, he could have put it in 4wd and the front would have pulled the rear on to dry land enough to get him out. Not ideal, but nothing in this situation was ideal, and that includes wimmins wearing shirts at the beach...

Did you two not read, he didnt change the gears in his front diff. So his 4x4 wont work properly. It would wreck some drivetrain parts.

he is on DIRT, the loose ground will let them spin at different speeds, like i said, not ideal and i wouldn't to it for more than 20 ft, but in that situation it would have taken less than 10 to get the truck out of there...

What's the point of having 4x4 if you can't use it?
