Default F150 Cam Phaser Issues and Etc.

I have always been a Ford man but Im having second thoughts because of these cam phaser isssues. Replaced mine with less than 30,000 miles and it has started again 60,000 miles later. I have also replaced a coil pack and I believe that I have another one acting up. Had to replace an exhaust manifold at about 70,000 that cost me $1000 dollars because the engine had to be pulled because of a broken bolt in the manifold. My cousin has a 04 that the cam phasers where raising hell on and they claimed it wouldn't hurt anything by driving, it just would sound bad. Well guess what it blew up and $5300 later he had a new engine. I know some claim that it was just the 04-05 engines but that aint so because my buddy has an 07 that is noisey as hell. I know alot of DIE HARD FORD GUYS are still defending these trucks with all these problems but I cannot and will not defend ford with these issues.

So, you took the time to register and create a user ID here, just to tell us our trucks suck?

How about some info like engine, year, mileage?

Do you have a question we could help with or did you just want to waste our time and tell us you no longer like Ford?

I would trade that POS in for a Chevy, you'll be way happier.

Engine pulled for a manifold? Those studs break all the time and have never had to pull because of that. Whatever shop you goto is doing it the hard way

The truck is an 04 and has a 5.4 engine with 95,000 miles on it. I wasn't trying to be a butt hole. I do own a 05 Chevy Silverado also that has 232,000 miles so I dont have to go buy one as you quoted. I have had little to no troubles and it hasn't been babied. It has seen alot of mud. The Ford only seen dirt roads. Unlike alot of FAVORITE BRAND BRAGGERS I OWN BOTH. I have a 79 f150 that used be my daily driver that I now use for mud bogging. I have owned it for 27 years. I have a 79 f250 that I have had for 2 years with 23,000 original miles that im planning on turning into a mud bogger. I have an 06 Tahoe with 130,000 miles so i have a mixture in my yard. I had a 97 Explorer with a V8 that hadI 241,000 miles before the Tahoe. I had a 92 f150 with 231,000 miles. I am a Ford Fan but as I stated I will not defend them if they put out crap.

Wow, several cam phaser threads at once here. Here goes again,

Mine just started ticking and it's a 2010 with 127K miles. I'm blaming 5w20 oil personally. Switching to 15w40 on the next oil change and will report back.

Personally I don't think it's a big enough issue for me to consider a different brand 1/2 ton in the future. Having driven (not owned) them all before I truly believe the F-150 is the all around best buy. This is not meant to start a brand war, just my observation/opinion.

these engines tend to make multiple noises at once. If you engine only makes noise after it warms up it is likely related to cam phasers. If the noise is momentary from a cold start 2 seconds it's bleed back from chain tensioner, of the ticking is persistent at start up and throughout it's your lash adjusters and followers. Heavier oil may quiet things a little but all you'll be doing is masking an issues that will cause damage to your engine. I replaced ally lash adjusters about 6k miles ago and it made a very notable reduction in engine noise. All my lash adjusters were seized and a few followers had excessive play. I would advise against going with heavier oil because I've been in there and can tell you that there are very small oil passages inside that engine.

My 04 had cam phasers replaced 3 times in about 40k. I traded it shortly after and they were hammering away again for a 4th time. 2 of my buddies had 05's. Both hammered also. One also was had engine failure related to the phasers.

The VCT 5.4's are a real piece of work, thats for sure.

Thats what I'm talking about. I don't care how much that you like a brand somewhere along the line when you are having these type problems with the expense involved not to mention the down time the light has to turn on. Why should I defend Ford for putting out a product that sounded like it was gonna fly all to hell with 21,000 miles on it and mine wasn't an isolated event. Ford should take it on themselves to resolve these reoccurring issues.

Yep, I've read enough cam mess problems with those years, what is it? About '04 - '09? I just met a man with a '10 with over 144,000 miles, nary a problem. I didn't know '10 had that issue. Maybe Ford fixed it mid year?
