Default Driving on ice.

Its 19 degress down here in San Marcos Texas (between Austin and San Antonio) As you all should know we Southern Texans aren't use to these crazy road conditions. Started sprinkiling few hours ago so the roads completely iced. I just got home and it was no fun. Quite a few little accidents and people sliding off the road. When my monster starts to let go its gets a tad scarey. Im sitting in my apartment and just heard somebody run into a parked car. I pray nobody hits my truck! I dont know how you guys up north hadle this crap for months at a time.

Driving on ice SUCKS...If I lived up North I would have a set of studded winter tires.

Up here when the roads get icy, the salt trucks come out. The trick is to go slow and leave lots of room between you and the guy in front of you but then there's the jerk behind you who's going too fast. If you're driving on a skating rink, eventually you're going to get crunched. The best advice is to stay home.

Studded tires have been illegal up here for decades.

thebestneverrest06 is right about the salt trucks and driving strategy, but there is another difference between winter conditions in the north, and the occasional ice event in the south.

I grew up on Lake Erie and moved to NC a few years ago.we had long, snowy winters in Ohio, but it was nowhere near as perilous as the ice storms I've seen in the south.

When you have ice on the roads, a little snow is actually a good thing - it gives you something to grip to.
Most of the storms I've seen in NC leave the roads as a sheet of naked ice. It's literally no different than trying to drive across a frozen lake - which is awesome when you're ice fishing, but not so much fun when you're commuting.

Don't let folks from the north fool you. It's not some acquired skill or magic. There's only two secrets to driving in winter conditions:
1- go slow
2- don't go, if you don't have to

These here Texans drive worse on snow then they do on ice..... going a lot slower, using multiple lanes, and sliding around. Going 40 past them was fun, 50 was funner at times =D
