Default Cost of underbody rustproofing?

I bought a new '12 Scab XLT Offroad a week ago Saturday. Absolutely love it! Anyway, my dealer recommended an underbody rustproofing job that they offered for $395. I decided against doing it that day since summer hasn't even started yet - I'll do it in October right before snow season starts.

$395 didn't strike me as an absurd price, but then again I really have no idea. What did you pay for a similar job? Is there a particular shop or brand that is better than the others? I am fond of my dealer and don't mind supporting them if that's a fair price... but like I said I have no idea

Thanks!

First thing! Never pay what the dealer is asking. Always negotiate. My dealer wanted $995 to do line-x. I offered $550 and he jumped at it. As far as rust proofing, I recommend RustCheck. Sure it will cost more in the long run, but a yearly or bi-yearly (depending where you live) application by a good sprayer will do a better job than a dealer undercoat. The dealer doesn't spray in the doors, tailgate, hood, rockers etc. My guy drops the spare, pulls out all lights, drops skid plates etc. It took him 2 1/2 hours to do my truck. Most shops said I'd be out in 45 minutes!!! I even drive 1-1/2 hours to this guy. He doesn't miss an inch of the truck.

I'm checking out RustCheck and a similar product called Krown, but there are no shops ANYWHERE near me! (Cincinnati, OH) Any alternatives I should look into?

I really don't mind doing it annually as long as it's done right. I plan to keep this truck for 10+ years, or until the turbos explode out of warranty. Whichever happens first.

I have had all of my cars rusted proofed with "Krown". It will greatly decrease the amount of rust on the truck. It is worth the time to find a place which will do a good job though. My Discount price runs around $100 - $110, depending on the size of the vehicle.

If you plan on keeping the truck +8 years it is well worth the investment.

I don't think you can go wrong with either Krown or Rust Check. It's all in the application.

I've seen vehicles go 20 years rust free with RustCheck. And we get alot of salt on the roads here.

Not to be a dick but I just bought a 2012 FX4 yesterday and I had the dealer include

Linex
Rust protection
Undercoat
Diamond Kote paint protection.

All that to say that they have a huge markup on these services.

Good job!! Thats awesome. I lucked out on the purchase price more than the after sale options. I got $16000.00 off the Window sticker price. After that they didn't want to throw anything in!!!!

Ya I really lucked out. The dealership is full of sleazy salespeople, but the price was right. I go elsewhere for servicing. Enjoy your truck.

I would do whatever you are going to do asap. The cleaner the truck is, the better the base application will stick.
