Default Convert to chevy power steering pump?

Hey guys,

I got a 89 f-150 4wd with a 5.0 and a 4 speed. When i got the truck the power steering leaked, and got low, then started whining. well i got sick of putting fluid in it everyday, so i just let it run out and broke the pump. after driving around for a couple weeks with no power steering i figured it was time to get a new one, because my arms hurt. So before i replaced it i filled it back up and found the leak(s). it was leaking through the return line and the high pressure line where it goes into the pump. So i replaced both lines, and the pump. well its been about 2 months and it is whining as good as ever. it is still full, doenst leak a drop. i dont want to take this thing back and put another whiny BS ford pump on it.

So really what i want to know is, is there a bracket so i can put a chevy pump on it? or has anyone done this before? i want to know because i would just buy one if they made it, otherwise i am going to make a bracket to convert it to a chevy pump.

please let me know if you guys have any info on this,

thanks

There's a thread about this already in the 87-96 forum. But, yes, there is a pump. Ford actually used the "GM" saginaw pump on E series. Another note:

My pump was noisy (no leaks) too. I put under drive pulleys on and "Mum's the word"! Go figure, slow it down and it shuts up.....

Welcome to the Forum. Am having great difficulty in restraining myself but I will try.

Forget about your idea of this mod. Forget about using anything but Ford OEM parts. Gypo parts always lead to frustration.

So instead of fixing it right the first time, you just let it break? >_<

well i was puttin about half a quart a day in it. i tried to fix the leak, by replacing the o-ring on the high pressure line, but it was coming from the part that is in the pump. so i replaced the pump and high pressure line, filled it up, and it was still leaking, from the return line. so i replaced the return line.
it has never ran low, so i do not understand why it would whine after only two months use.

i want a chevy pump because i know that is will last a long time and it wont ever whine (unless it is low on fluid). someone told me a friend of theirs did this, and he was able to just mod the bracket to get the chevy pump in there.

i have made up my mind on this. ive looked into the saginaw pump but i will need a different bracket/pulley also. plus i have a brand new power steering pump off of my '00 Chevy silverado (got wrecked).

A Saginaw pump is NOT a "GM" part. Ford used them a well. Albeit not as much, Ford did use them. So, they would be considered OEM to Ford's as well.

You'll notice under "Power Steering Pump Model" it CLEARLY says "FORD". Yet, it is a saginaw pump! And a rather nice one to boot!

Thank you for the information on the Saginaw pump. I am aware of its use on the Ford Vans.

My statement of using OEM parts is quite simple, avoid using universal engineered one size fits all parts. All pumps do not produce the same pressure, nor do they have the same volume of flow for a given RPM. Lets stay with what the specs call out, not just say, I'm going to a GM pump because they are better, and Fords suck.

A couple of years back, I had a brake booster failure and had to install a NAPA replacement. OK, this is simple, why not? My brakes after that felt funny, thinking this and that, trying this and that, nothing really was the fix to get my normal brakeing "feel". Finally the NAPA replacement booster failed and off to Ford I go, "special order" I was told, the 4.2L V-6 takes a different booster than the V-8's use. Not only are my brakes back to the normal "feel", but no more PO 174 engine running lean on left bank. Go figure!

I cringe every time Ford tells me to go to after market because of my vehicles age and parts are not available. Universal parts, one size fits all, "suck" big time.
