Default CNG Ford F-150?

How much extra would you be willing to pay for your new F-150, if it had a CNG (compressed natural gas) engine, and you could buy 130 octane CNG for $1.57 a gallon equivalent?

The reason I ask is that I just came back from a vacation at Park City, Utah, and while there I visited Heber City for a train ride. Right in the middle of Heber was a gas station, with the first price listed at $1.56/9, right above the $3.79 for regular.

So I took another look, and it was for a gallon of CNG. In Heber City? WTF.

Googling it, I found out that the $1.57 is for a GGE unit, Gallon of Gasoline Equivalent. The same amount of energy as in a gallon of gas, but 130 octane. Hmmm.

According to this video, this station opened in 2011.

Then, 2 days later we are cruising at 70 on I-15 in Salt Lake City, and this Honda passes me, regular plates and a CNG decal on it. It was one of these.

Personally, I would love to see a CNG engine option for the F-150. How much would you save in a year by cutting your gas bill in half? If GM or Chrysler beat Ford to it, you know what will happen. Just look around at the econoboxes that are not made in the US, and remember why that happened.

Are you listening, Ford? The train is starting to leave the station, you can hop aboard or be left behind.

They make kits that allow the use of CNG, only problem is finding a place to tank up. You still have to run a tank of gasoline every so often for some odd reason, we have a few of them in our fleet.

Other problem is the tank is HUGE and takes up a lot of cargo space.

Any gasoline engine can run natural gas or propane.

Absolutely true if you do an aftermarket conversion. Back in the late 90's we converted some Chevy pickups to CNG and I had a big, black FRP tank just behind the cab.

A factory truck could fit the tank or tanks in anywhere, all you need is a small hose to connect them.

As for fillups, there are more stations than I thought.

I've seen people drive across town for 20 cents a gallon savings, LOL, how far would you drive for $1.50 a gallon savings?

They are doing add-ons for the F-250's, but having it right out of the factory would obviously be cheaper.

Sure would like the option to consider it.

That would be awesome. My buddy runs his dodge dually on a diesel/propane system.

You also have to consider cost, an extra fuel supply and required components to operate could easily top 10 grand per vehicle.

I checked my area and there is only 1 place to get a refill and it's 25 miles from my house and across a major river. Other places exceed an hour and a half drive.

Screw that.

Carbureted vehicles use a simple nitrous fogger plate to introduce the propane to the engine. Ten grand is not accurate.

WhoTF still drives a carbed engine? Other than a modern vehicle. My bike is carbed but you won't see me strap any CNG tanks on it.

Be realistic.

I have two carbureted vehicles, but that was an example to show you you're insane if you think it costs ten grand for a propane conversion kit.

Be realistic.

I'd pay up to 10 grand over a stock f150 for a cng f150 with a 60k powertrain warranty. Chevy and Ram already offer a hd truck with cng conversion from the factory with warranty. The problem is that it takes up a lot of bed space (not that much of an issue), there are no dealers that can service it in canada, its as much as a diesel truck and it adds a lot of weight reducing mpg (bigger deal in a smaller truck).

Even with natural gas at $3.20 a gallon in canada its still a lot cheaper then buying gas at $5.50.

And unless you live in the middle of nowhere there are a ton of cng stations around. Within a mile of where I live there are 8 gas stations and a cng station 3 miles away.

Unfortunately I doubt there will be a half ton cng truck anytime soon and without a factory warranty cng may be more trouble then its worth.
