Question Check Engine Light

I recently bought a 96 F150 with a 4.9I6 engine. The check engine light is on. The truck also has an exhaust leak coming from either the exhaust gasket or somewhere else up near the motor. I've heard these may be related. Is this so? Also, is there a common place where these trucks leak exhaust?

More than likely that CEL is associated with the front o2 sensors on whichever side you have the exhaust leak. I would take it to the muffler shop and fix those leaks then have your truck scanned to see if it was if those codes are associated with the front o2 sensors.

Invest in a code reader, and a Haynes manual. Read these captions:

There is no factory exhaust gasket. Exhaust leaks are due to rust, cracks, or missing/damaged/loose parts. In some cases, a rusted surface can be planed. To find the leak, use a mechanic's stethoscope or just 3' of garden hose:
