Default Certified Pre owned questions/issues

Hey folks, not sure if this is the right place. I'm new to the forum, but couldn't think of anywhere else to ask this question.

Last September I purchased a CPO 2013 F-150 Platinum. There were some odd engines issues that the dealer took care of for me. It took about a month after buying the truck to actually drive it more than 50 miles before the check engine light came on. Overall the truck has been great.

After the engine issue was fixed, towards the middle of winter (live in Minnesota) I noticed my tire pressure in two tires started to go down. A good friend of mine is a GM for discount tire and he had someone look at the wheels and they're corroded from the inside. He said this didn't happen overnight and that it can happen. He also said I would likely need to buy new wheels soon as this issue wasn't going to stop.

At the same time I started to notice my tailgate was developing a weird metal popping noise every time I closed the tailgate. I thought it was the cold weather but I noticed once it warmed up the issue was getting worse. I took a look at the tailgate and noticed the frame was pressing into tailgate which was causing it to be misaligned. This didn't happen from me or anyone hitting me while I owned the truck. So I brought it into the Ford dealer I bought it from and had them do a warranty repair and to check the wheels and tailgate as these issues seemed like they should be fixed under my CPO warranty or something.

Dealer said the tailgate isn't a warranty issue and said to just go to a body shop to fix it and the wheels are indeed corroded but it's not a warranty issue.

I did my research and noticed the tailgate issue and it's misalignment was present PRIOR to me buying the truck. Yes, I didn't notice it at first because for the first month I couldn't drive it due to engine issues. I didn't pay too much attention to a tailgate when my truck's engine was acting up for a month straight.

I have photo proof of the listing with the tailgate misalignment but the dealer won't fix it. They also won't fix the wheels that were clearly corroded prior to me buying the truck either.

I'm asking for help. Not a "we can do it all for free" answer. Has anyone had this kind of issue with a dealer after buying a car?

Part of the CPO checklist is checking of wheels and tailgate alignment and they clearly didn't inspect these parts of my truck prior to selling it as CPO.

First, just so you know, Certified Pre-Owned, really only means that it will pass a safety inspection, that is all. Everyone thinks that getting a CPO vehicle, that the dealer went through every inch of the vehicle, when in fact all do is look for major leaks, top of the fluids and maybe do an oil change, check the braking system and lights. That's pretty much it, basically the bare minimum.


Next, if you have aluminum rims, they will corrode, which is really just oxidation, and the further north you are the worse and faster it will happen. This is considered a maintenance item and not a warranty item. This does not mean that you will need new rims soon as your "Friend" told you, unless you have damaged rims. All you can do is when one starts to leak around the rim, have all four tires removed, the rims cleaned(the bead of the rim is wire brushed clean), and the tires remounted and balanced, then you should be good for a couple of years or so.


As far as the tailgate, your stuck with it, body work is not covered under any warranty.

Another thing to remember, A dealer is not making any money on inspecting used vehicle, and neither is the mechanic that is doing the inspections, so they do as little as possible and as fast as possible.

Sorry for such an unpleasant story. I ordered my Toyota from the US through https://clearit.ca/services/importing-cars, I didn`t receive an additional set of keys, but my dealer solved this issue in 5 days. So it`s better to have a professional dealer than a bad seller, who is interested only in money =) Try to be careful and do not fall into such stories .. Good luck!

Hmmm things sure have changed since I was doing CPO inspections, I got paid 1.5hrs to do one and it entailed a very in depth inspection from bumper to bumper, a full powertrain diagnostic, pull all wheels and inspect every component in the suspension system, brake system, exhaust system, look for previous body damage and document any found, NVH diagnostics to make sure there's none of the issues the op is asking about, full electrical systems operation right down to vanity lights etc....

Also the dealer is able to command a higher price on the sale because of said inspections, Ford demands proof of these detailed inspections before they issue a CPO warranty.

Where exactly are you getting your information from?
