Pretty much what I did with mine... and haven't had an issue in the back since.
Although now I have one of the white cargo lights burnt out and haven't replaced it because I don't feel like screwing with the sealant stuff I put around it...
... that and I am lazy.

On a side note, as long as it is not too cold where you live, you can just run a hose over it or a few pitchers of water.

First, that guy joe is an idiot, he never posts anything useful. To the op, mine leaked where the black strips that cover the seam and they drain into the window seal. I had to take out the back window and reseal. I also got a new 3rd light because of spider cracks around the screw holes. No issues since.

Do you have a sunroof? Water could get in there, but with some soap and water and the a/c blasting as mentioned pour around the obvious points. It may save you time chasing all the other more obscure places.

In retrospect, had I had some gasket material handy, I could have just replaced made a new gasket, but I didn't. This method will definitely make replacing the bulbs much more difficult.
FWIW, you can use closed-cell foam weatherstripping in whatever thickness you like, and it is available in any decent hardware store as well as HD and Lowes.

Make sure it is closed-cell, it will not absorb water, and it will separate easily, unlike silicone.

You sound like me. I'm dreading the day the a bulb burns out.

I guess Joe just wants to have his post count super high or something. I had a short window to fix this with no rain, so I did. But wouldn't you know it, it hasn't really rained since. Just moist air or a small drizzle.

I'll definitely look into the seals as you mentioned if it doesn't stop leaking. Thanks for the heads up.

No sunroof. The soap and water idea sound like a winner. I'll give this a try.

Yep, probably should have done this.

My sliding rear window leaked and spotted up my seats pretty bad. It was never enough to soak things though. You've probably pegged the issue with the 3rd break light

I think Joe is bucking to set the record for number of forum members that set him to "ignore" status.
