Default Am I getting bent over?

Got a quote for my brakes today, I knew it was gonna be bad. I need basically everything replaced. Rotors, pads, and all the internal stuff in the drums, and the wheel cylinders 'cause one leaks. Anyways, final price, from my buddies very trusty mechanic - $650-$700 for everything. About $275-$300 for the fronts, $300-$350 for the rear stuff.

So, does this sound about right to you guys? Or does it sounds too high?

If he changes everything and I mean everything it's about $300 in parts.

I've heard of worse. It all depends on how bad they are, and what needs replaced. Some times breaks can take a long time, especially if they haven't been touched in years. It might be worth it to get a few other quotes, but if the friend is reputable that refered you to said "trusty mechanic" then it might be a good deal. If your brakes are that bad, then his quote might me in the right ball park.

I work at a ford dealership, so I get 10% discount on parts, but I got a price for rotors and pads front and back and it was $357 just for that. and I get $30/hr for labor instead of $75/hr. Theyd charge me like $100 in labor for doing it, plus the 357 for the pads and rotors.

Labor is expensive! Drum brakes take a long time, especially if they are destroyed. I just called some friends that are mechanics, and they said that could be a pretty fair quote.

I was thinking it was. Basically, everything needs replacing, and I just want to get it completely out of the way. But, I'm getting the fronts done very soon, and the rears in another couple weeks, for the sake of my finances. After the fronts are done, if it's stopping smooth as butter, I think I just want to get the new linings/pads/whatever it's called in the drums. But I'm preparing for a $700 hit.

Thanks guys!

You're fronts are disk right? If so, just do it your self. They are super easy. you could save a few hundred bucks too. If you are mechanically inclined, do the rears too. It's kind of a pain, but you'll be able to take pride in doing it your self, not to mention learning something very useful.

I would say that's about an average price. My suggestions would be to go to your local autoparts store and get a chilton repair manual for your truck. Read the chapter on brakes and if you are comfortable doing it your self then give it a try. If not leave it to a mechanic and do not attempt this yourself unless you know what your doing!!

What exactly does the truck need? It is really easy to do the front brakes, especially if you leave the rotors. I just throw pads on the front of mine all the time, 30 minute job.
