Default 4x4 engage

So I understand that to engage the 4wd, you must put it in neutral, and then switch to 4h or 4l. And you must do the same to put it back in 2 wheel if I'm correct. Well, today I made a rookie mistake by putting it in park when putting it back I two wheel. So I put it in drive and slowly took off and I was maybe going 3mph when it locked in to 4h! So I stopped, put it in neutral, and put it back in 2wd again. And I tried out both 4h an 4l after that. Worked just fine, didn't hear no strange noises, drove fine on the highway (in 2wd obviously) and when I got home, I crawled under my truck and checked for any abnormalities. Everything checked out fine. So my question: is my truck okay? Is there anything I need to look out for? Thanks In advance everyone.

You don't have to be in neutral to switch to 4H. You can switch to 4H while driving at any speed, even at highway speeds (although why you'd ever want to I don't know). To switch to 4L I believe you have to be stopped, with your foot on the brake, but I don't think you have to be in neutral (I could be wrong).

Oops, sorry, I just noticed your signature. Not sure of the 2004 models. Sorry, I was referring to the newer trucks.

If you looked it over and no issues since you're probably fine.

Only if you have the electronic shift on the fly switch. If you have the manual 4x4 shifter on the floor you can't.

Is this applicable only to Fords?
Years ago I owned a Jeep Cherokee with a manual (on the floor) lever and could shift to 4H at any speed.
