Default 4.6L vs 5.4

So just a few engine questions since I am no expert on this stuff.
1, is there any advantage to the 4.6L V8 over the 5.4? It seems like with trucks, bigger is always better, and in my used truck, there really isn't much of a cost diff at this point. Was the 4.6 simply a cheaper option, or are there actual good points?
2, how does the ford 4.6L engine compare to the dodge 4.7L?
3, what's up with this new V6 ford is making that can out tow some V8s?

depends on the years your looking at. 04-08 the 4.6 does not have the plug issue of them breaking off or the cam phaser problems. Its a simple engine but does not put out the same numbers obviously. There is 600000 threads comparing the two engines in the 04-08 section of the forum. Never owned a dodge and never plan on it so i cant compare the two engines. You can find all the info you need on the Ecoboost in the 09+ section. Yes its a V6, yes its Turbo Charged, Yes it can out tow the V8's

Very cool on the V6, my truck is an 07 so I guess I'll have to browse the threads and see what I can find out. Thanks, I know dodge puts the 4.7L in the 1500, was curious how it compared to Fords 4.6, I'm not brand loyal, ford gave me the best deal so I went with it, dodge before that, chevy before that.

Both are old proven reliable engines. The 5.4 clearly has some more hp/tq so if you have a choice go for the 5.4 since the fuel economy is negligible.

Kinda already went with the 4.6, but it does seem there's no advantage at all over the 5.4 and most consider the smaller engine a dog. The truck is an 07, which I think means it's a 3V and not the two, but both seem to be called "gutless" in the threads I saw. Truck didn't come with a tow package, but seems to have come with a tranny cooler which I thought was odd. At 6500lbs towing, I think I'll be ok with my two horses and a trailer which is about all I need, but I won't be winning any speed contests, lol.

I recently bought an 04 with the 4.6. Its a nice truck and does what I need it to do, however my dads 07 with the 5.4 gets better MPG and is more fun to drive. I drive 90% city and get barely 14 mpg with a light foot. My dads on the other hand gets 17-18 but he travels quite a bit more highway for me.
I got the 4.6 because I got a hell of a deal for what I need and i won't use it to tow more than a handful of times short distances.

I have the 4.6 as well. Yes it is fairly gutless in my opinion but as Adam said, it does what i needed to do. I have had 0 issues with it and im at 100k miles as it stands now. I would like the extra power and torque, as most anyone would but overall i have no major complaints about the engine itself

I had a 2000 5.4, now have a 2004 4.6. Initially the difference was very much with the 4.6 just being gutless. I put an Edge Evo tuner on the 4.6 and it made quite a difference in performance. Very happy with this truck now. Fun to drive now as it will get up to speed without using too much throttle. Gas mileage now at just over 19 for all driving.
