yes, no idea if yours is going to have pcm/catalytic converter problems too but here's the 2nd thread on my issues earlier this year ....

only good news is 'so far so good' since the last repair when the 2nd cat was replaced. just took it on a long road trip (4600 miles in 2 weeks) and no issues there either. hope this helps.... ford extended my warranty to "help rebuild customer confidence in my truck" (but if the problems return that's it for this truck....)

I can hear the noise daily. It will be very subtle for the most part but will get loud enough at certain times to where people riding in the truck will make note of it. The dealer has checked it out twice and found no codes and said the timing was fine. The dealer did not drive it though, the odometer going in was the same when I picked it up. When i picked it up from service the 2nd time the service writer said to make a appointment to have a tech ride with which I'm going to do. When i find out what it is I will be sure to post.

mine would do it when I was just barely accelerating ... once when I was crawling through a desert trail so I was in 4x4 just idling other than lightly gassing it over the dunes (just to keep momentum)

again, I have no idea if the dieseling sound had anything to do with my other problems - but I will say it hasn't done it since the PCM reprograms (2) and the replacement cats

Hi Casper7,

I want to escalate this up to your regional customer service manager so they can ensure this gets resolved. To get things moving, PM me your full name, best daytime phone number, VIN, current mileage, and servicing dealership info.

It's timing chain slap. It comes from a failed tensioner. There is a tsb for it

That's exactly what i was thinking. My 2013 STX 4x4 5.0 is doing this same thing occasionally. It only has 27,000 miles on it. I wondered if octane boost would suffice?

Hi Casper,

I very interested in hearing about your eventual resolution to this issue.

I have a 2013 XLT 5.0 with 27,000 Kms on it and it recently started doing the same thing, diesel like sound on light acceleration, when towing or going up hill. Took it to the dealership, and they said it was bad fuel (oily) had fouled two plugs, which they replaced (two codes returned, P0300 and P0316, I believe they were for intermittent spark plug firing). Told me to fill up at a reliable gas distributor and sent me on my way.

Leaving the dealership the engine light came on at start up, and the dieseling noise persisted. I filled up as instructed ,with a mid grade, and two days later it appears to be getting worse. This morning it barely started and died twice while warming up and running very rough.

My plan is to give it time to run through the "good" gas, and see if it disappears, I 'll let you know results either way.

Could anyone provide advise/opinion as to how long a truck should run (miles or fuel) to correct a "bad gas" issue that had caused plugs to foul and rough running?

I had about a quarter tank of fuel when I took it to the dealer with a "dieseling sound" issue. The dealer changed a couple of fouled plugs and recommended I fill up with "good" gas, which I did right away. I've run a quarter of a tank and still no change in the engine noise issue. Starts are getting harder now, with the engine dying once or twice each morning on start up.

I think it's time to go back to the dealer!!

Hi Casper7,

I am having the same issue with my truck. I drive a 2012 screw XLT 5.0 with 22k miles. Around 21k miles I started to notice a faint pre igniting Diesel engine like noise when I would accelerate after stopping at red lights and stop signs. I took the truck to the dealer the day after I noticed the noise and was told it may be bad gas or a water pump TSB. I am aware of the metallic ticking noise of the water pump but due to the dealer service department being backed up that has yet to be addressed and is also on the "list". Since then this diesel noise has gotten worse which resulted in my return to the dealer at 22k miles. I am schedule for service next week but I am concerned as this is my first major issue I've had with my truck. Truck is scheduled for service next Wednesday. Please update us on your situation.
