Default 2011 Rear View Camera

Hi fellow F150'ers. Bought a new 2011 F150 XLT. When I put it in reverse, I get the small BLANK screen in the left side of my rear view mirror, but no image. I asked the parts AND service depts about completing the package so I could have an actual image, and after a LOT of reasearch, they all came up blank with what I would need to add to have a rear view camera. There doesn't "seem" to be an empty harness near the spare, and nobody can figure out where or what I need to tap in, to complete the package. I have a standard,(no camera), badge. The guys in parts actually recommended I consult an F150 forum for answers! Thanks, Steve

Default 2011 Rear View Camera (Addendum)

Just for clarity, the guys at my Ford dealership knew that I needed the badge camera + harness of course, it's just that after repeated sessions laying under the truck, we couldn't determine what harness was needed, or where to tie in to. Any help would be appreciated. I'm aware of aftermarket, but want to try to utilize the existing mirror monitor, since there's already "something" feeding into it. Thanks, Steve

Check in the '09 sub-section and you'll find links to the parts. I'm on my cell so I can't search it for you right now. I don't think the add-on parts are expensive either. But I have to wonder, if they put the mirror in, did then INTEND to put a backup camera in and missed it somehow? Make sure you haven't already paid for it. But the bulk of work of adding the aftermarket OEM camera are already done for you.

Sorry, but I would run, not walk away from a dealership that gave me that advice on a new truck. They are supposed to be the ones that know what is going on.

Question

ummmm, correct me if I am wrong, but........ from what I have read on here and through research the tie in is where the reverse/brake lights are.....isn't it? That is what triggers that image(blank thing) in your mirror. I would think to probably take the light housing off and see if there is wiring running to the tailgate through the hinge area. Better yet.....you could just unscrew the access panel on top of the tailgate and look for the harness flopping around in there?

Here are the parts I used on my 2011:

Camera (Tailgate) harness AL3Z-14A411C
Bezel (Camera) AL3Z19H511A
Rear Camera AL3Z19G490A
Name Plate (Ford Logo) 9L3Z-1542528-A
Screw & Washer Asy. N805949-S439
Insert (For above screw) W714711-S439

I got my mirror and connector on eBay, also purchased a 5 pin round weather-pack connector and crimping tool on eBay. I used the weather-pack in place of the ford connector below the tailgate because my truck didn't have the wiring to the display and I ran my own (2 wire 18 AWG twisted pair cable purchased from Altex Computer and Electronics) http://www.altex.com/ The other 3 connections on the 5 pin plug were, shield drain, power and ground. Because I ran my own wire and omitted the computer connection I don't have the ability to zoom the camera image or the option to turn the guide lines off, but those two items don't make a different to me. Hope that helps. If you need more specific wiring info let me know. I still have the wiring diagrams and connector pin locations from my project.

Default 2011 Rear View Camera (unsolved)

I really appreciate all the feedback. This a great F150 community! However.... my problem is not how to wire the rear view camera, it's where to tie in. As mentioned in my first post, I have a blank display/square come up in the left hand corner of my mirror when I put the truck in reverse, which tells me the appropriate wiring is coming from somewhere(?) and running into the mirror. If I can find where the wiring is currently terminated, then tap into it, completing the rear view camera set-up shouldn't be a problem. There are currently no wires or harnesses inside the tailgate. Just short of grabbing the wires at the mirror and pulling out headliner, I'm not sure how to find the "end" of the currently installed harness to tap into, so I can run to the tailgate, then to a camera. Thanks again, Steve

Ok so your truck has the correct mirror but is missing the cam and some of the wires? The mirror will display a blue screen if it gets the reverse signal but no video signal. Check to see if you mirror connector has wires in the two end spots on passenger side when plugged in. If so then you have the correct roof harness. When I get home tonight to my computer I'll post a picture / diagram that shows all the OEM Ford harnesses involved in the system and give you a link to the connector faces in my albums.
