Charging at Home
Just bought a 2023 Lightning today and I'm looking for advice on charging at home. My vehicle came with the Ford charger but plugged into a 110 volt outlet is going so slow that it's not going to be an option.
My wife has a Tesla so I just got an extension for the Tesla charger cable and a Tesla to J1772 adapter and we share the charger. But you definitely need a level 2 charger. Go to Amazon and type "level 2 ev charger". There are tons out there. If you happen to have a 240V plug in your garage, some level 2 chargers plug directly into that. I had to get an electrician to install the Tesla charger.
Back when we got the Tesla there were few chargers on the market. If I were starting from scratch today, I would get a level 2 j1772 charger and a J1772 to tesla adapter.

I installed a 50 amp NEMA 14-50R outdoor outlet but ran 6 AWG wire because of the distance and in case I want to upgrade to 60 amp fast charger in the future. I converted to 8 AWG about a foot from the outlet to allow for reasonable size wire in the outlet itself. Overnight it will recharge about any driving we do. We are retired and the Flash has a little less range but meets our needs and only charge 2 or 3 times a week. I have yet to charge anywhere but home or sign up for remote charging. That will probably bite me one day. Our distance driving Outback has pretty much remains unused in the garage which is too small for the Lightning. My wife, who was not fond of parking the Lariat, has really come around with all the cameras and loves the frunk for shopping. We love never pulling into a gas station!
The only other option is to use the public fast charger stations, such as Tesla. I have a 2025, and I'm not set up for home charging, so I have no choice. But with my commute, I charge up twice a week by hitting the Tesla station at around 6am (for off-peak pricing). I get charged and make it to work by 7, and it only costs me around $20 each session. Being under $50 a week in energy is still way less than the $50+/wk in fuel I was pouring into my diesel rig.
I hope to get the level 2 charging at some point, but I would have to upgrade my panel. Since I rent, I'm not willing to make that investment on someone else's property.
Good luck, and I hope you enjoy your new ride!
