Default Ford doubles down on failure...

"Going forward, the full-size F-150 will be offered with three options under the hood: a gas-only engine, a mild hybrid, and an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) that runs on electricity but uses an onboard gas generator on long trips. Ford said the new version should retain the Lightning's neck-snapping acceleration and deliver more than 700 miles of total range."

Well yeah, maybe 700 miles with far more mechanical complexity, and only while running the gas generator. Unless that generator is insanely powerful, it’s not going to be able to generate sufficient continuous power to enable an uninterrupted 700 mile range, and it’s going to have to carry the extra weight of a gas tank and the generator in additional to the 1000+ pound electric battery, so it’s going to go through tires even faster than a straight EV. What’s most likely is when the battery runs out—and it will do it more quickly because of pulling that extra weight—drivers will have to stop and fire up the generator, which surely isn’t going to charge as fast as a stationary fast charger.

"Stop and fire up the generator"

What are you even talking about? The generator will run once the battery gets to a low enough point to continue to keep the vehicle moving. It's not going to make you stop and charge the battery pack. I truly think you have a complete misunderstanding of how EREVs work.

Just repeating what Ford is reporting: Ford is now rethinking how it will electrify its best-selling pickup.

"Ford is scrapping the all-electric version of America's favorite car. The F-150 Lightning will stop rolling out of the automaker's Dearborn, Michigan, factory — marking a major retreat from Ford's most ambitious EV bet.

We now know enough about the US market where we have a lot more certainty in this second inning, CEO Jim Farley added. Going forward, the full-size F-150 will be offered with three options under the hood: a gas-only engine, a mild hybrid, and an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) that runs on electricity but uses an onboard gas generator on long trips. Ford said the new version should retain the Lightning's neck-snapping acceleration and deliver more than 700 miles of total range"

Which sounds different from a hybrid.

The EREV sounds really intriguing

There is no rethinking, Ford is making it an EREV. I think you need to do a little research on how a series hybrid produces power for the battery (the engine in an EREV) to turn the electric drive motors.

Nothing in that statement suggest that "drivers will have to stop and fire up the generator".

I've only interacted with 2 Lightnings.
The owners are thrilled with the vehicles, they both use them for business. I've interacted with one a fair enough amount to understand what it is/isn't.

If it wasn't for the range issue and time of charging issue, these trucks seem to be dialed in for the most part. Some really neat benefits and prove EV is a viable option for a work truck.

Will see what develops in the next 5 years.

any guesses on the powerplant? need efficiency and durability, it's just sitting there generating power at a constant rpm.
2.7 without the turbos?

I'm trying to understand how discontinuing a product that wasn't making money and replacing it with something different is "doubling down on failure".
