Question YFA carb rebuild or replace?

I have an 86 F150 with the inline 6 and a single barrel YFA carb. Truck starts for a second with starter fluid then dies. Gas is getting through the filter to the carb but no gas in the carb. I would guess I need to rebuild this but never rebuilt a carb for an auto so I’m wondering if I should hire this out or can the average guy do this watching a youtube video. Are all rebuild kits the same?

Considered buying a new carb from Amazon but don’t have much faith in the Chinese copies. Worth it or no?
Sorry about picture size; I don't know how to reduce them.

It depends on the condition of the throttle plate
If the plate is worn out, the carb will leak vacuum and not idle well among other things
That is when a replacement is necessary.

No gas in the carb's bowl ? Either the float is stuck not allowing fuel in, fuel pump problem or the cam lobe for the pump is worn affecting the operation of the mechanical fuel pump.

Keep in mind, just because a carb is new, doesn't mean it's set up properly. I myself would rebuild instead of buying a Chinese made carburator.

I haven't taken anything apart yet but will check the bowl and float today as I'm off. The pump was replaced last year and is pushing fuel through the filter with no problems. Thanks for the tips.

Try gently tapping on the side of the carb first.

Did the rebuild. Replaced the needle pin and seat since I had it in the kit. Adjusted the float to specs provided. Adjusted the metering rod with the help of Youtube. Replaced pump diaphragm but the old one felt fine. A couple questions.
Pic 1 - All of the diagrams show a pump check weight and check ball. Mine didn't have that, it has a needle on the end of the weight as you can see in the pic. Is that right? It's been running for years with that in there so it must be okay.
Pic 2 - I have a heat-shielded metal tube connected in the Hot Air Choke Fitting but the other end is loose behind the carb and you can see it's corroded so it hasn't been connected to anything in a while. Where did this loose end go and is it necessary?

this weighted needle is what's in my carb.

Hope you got this figured out. The tube is for the choke. The other end goes in the exhaust manifold. Those tubes are reproduced.

The big tall power piston diaphragm inside that carb is the common failure point
You get a good one of those installed in that YF1A and it should run right
Good luck
Verify the float level and a new float is always a good idea
