Default Project Updates and other things

Ok guys so the late model F150's have How to's and other things so I figured I would start a thread about those things for all of us who have the classics. This is where we can give project updates, tell what you did to replace a part or rebuild a part on your truck and how you did it, what all you have going on with your truck IE: Engine and Upgrades, Gearing Upgrades, How You ran your exhaust, etc. Just general things that may help others out who come along looking for ideas on how to do somethings to their truck.

If you have something to add don't be shy add it to this thread! I'll be adding somethings like rebuilding a 2bbl carburetor, replacing front crankshaft oil seal on a 351w.

This is what a Nodular 9" rearend looks like so when you go to look for third-members you can tell if it is Nodular. Nodular Iron is Magnesium mixed w/ the Cast-Iron in the molding process making a virtually indestructible third-member, my 1979 F150 has a nodular third-member whereas my Bronco has a regular third-member.

Ok here is ALOT of info I have collected and wrote myself for informative purposes.

I thought this might help anyone who is new to these trucks or anyone who needs to look up axle or transmission codes or identify things such as what the c6 pan looks like and how to tell the difference in a 302 and 351w, or the difference in an 8.8" rear axle and a 9" and just general knowledge on replacing or fixing things. Move this somewhere else if need be feel free to ad info or change anything.

The easiest way(for me) to tell the difference in a 302 and a 351 Windsor if there is no firing order stamped in the Intake Manifold is to see if a socket will fit on the bottom bolt of the Thermostat housing, on a 302 you will not be able to get a socket on it as the Timing Cover comes up and blocks it. If the firing order is stamped in the Intake Manifold the 302 will read 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8 and the 351w will read 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8. Now the 302 shares the same firing order with the following motors: 255, 360, 390, and 460 in Cubic inches in Liters they are Respectfully the 4.2L, 5.9L, 6.5L and the 7.5L. The 351w shares the same firing order with the following motors: 351m and 400 in Cubic inches in Liters they are Respectfully the 5.8L, and 6.6L. And for the Diesel Guys your firing order for the 6.9L is 1-2-7-3-4-5-6-8. Now to differentiate between the 302 and 351w which are smaller than the engines listed above is that the Thermostat housing on a 302 and 351w is on the Intake Manifold and the bigger V8's it is in the front of the block. Another way is to count the valve cover bolts, a 302 and 351w will have 6 valve cover bolts and the bigger v8's will have 8. And the fuel pump bolts on the Small block will be horizontal - whereas the 351m and 400 will be Vertical |

In 1980 Ford Motor Company redesigned the Fullsize Bronco and F-150's which included the Dana 44 front 4 wheel drive axle being made into an Independent Suspension axle which Ford dubbed "TTB" which stands for Twin Traction Beam, a hybrid of the Twin I Beam front suspension in a 2 wheel drive and the Straight Axle Dana 44 4 wheel drive front axle.(Dana is also sometimes called Spicer as it is the Dana-Spicer Company). All the engines put into the Bronco in 1980-1996 were the 300ci 6 cylinder, the 302ci v8, the 351m and w ci v8's and the 400ci v8 In liters they are Respectfully the 4.9L, 5.0L, 5.8L, and 6.6L. The f-series is listed below as to what engines came in them.

Now I thought even though this covers 1980-1996 some of this also counts toward the 1978-1979 bronco and the 1973-1996 F-Series as most axle parts and transmission parts and engine parts are the same, so everyone who has info feel free to post what you know or do when you replace a part or multiple parts on your Bronco or F-Series truck, such as changing front rotors and brake pads or replacing or repacking wheel bearings or replacing lockouts.

I will post pics of what a c6 pan looks like and what a 9" rearend looks like VS an 8.8" rearend.

Feel free to make any changes to the list below this was copied number for number out of my notes. This is what I have for now. The axle codes that begin with "H" are Limited Slip(L.S.) axles. My books only go from 1976 to 1986 for transmission and axle codes as that was the last book I bought.

I have a 78 f150 ranger 4wd. When I got it I was told from the previous owner that it came with a factory lift and it currently fits 33's with a lot of room. Will 35x 12.50 fit on these trucks stock? If not what is an economical lift that will give me enough room for 35's?
Thank you.
