1st off, good looking truck!! now back to business.
Couple things
1-That part appears to have a small tang on the brass plunger so as to lock onto something to be able to rotate it ie, dimmer, w/s wipers, If those are out of the ? I'd just save the part if it appears not to fit either.
2- Not so sure about the p/ brake although a goid thought, reason is that it looks like a rotating type of devise to me.
3- LEDs some are "polarity specific" meaning if they dont work one way rotate 180°, when they do work you " cannot" dim them... they're either on or off.
My truck is blue and i put blue in all my dash bulbs and are easy on my eyes and easy to see, all the LED exteriors are clear except the red 3rd brake light bulb i installed into my rear upper cab... its nice n bright.
4- Remove your cluster and use an ink eraser (the best) or a regular eraser and "carefully" clean your bulb and other terminal contacts, cleaning the eraser as you go and unplug the connector at the steering column and clean all those as well. 41+ yrs of oxidation.
All the pc board and componets are available just kind of pricy but still cheaper than a new F150 plus U can actually do most all repairs yourself and without expensive equipment.
Just think in terms of how much $$ your saving plus your truck is only ONE of a few on the road, a real ego booster when you hear "what a nice truck you got there"
I'm just completing a full cab off restoration and paint job that i did myself and have just short of 7k in it that i think is about 10 or so payments on a new one and if i must say, even the paint job turned out quite nice being a two stage and my 1st ever but with alot of research beforehand .
Disconnecting the speedometer cable takes a little studying but it unplugs, just use finess and patience and you'll be good.As far as parts go "don't " rule out Dennis Carpenter in NC, he has Ford dies and produces as close to OEM as they come. ALSO....while your cluster is out snoop around and see if you can find what looks like a home for your mysterious part but don't worry about it if its part of your headlight dimmer, you won't need it with LEDs.
Good Luck n keep us posted. Curious minds are anxious for answers.
P.S. What part of the world are you in to find such a clean '79, just curious and looking for another project... love em!!

On a serious note I don't think it like it belongs on your trk,,,,interesting ???
it does look like it is part of a switch thou.....not the headlight switch.....

The pics that might have helped us help you would be of the DASH, all around the area you were working in when it fell out. The face, the bottom, and any interior shots you can get lit & focused.

I stumbled back across this thread just to see an answer......I was turning wrenches back then & I used to pride myself in working under dashes...
My first thoughts ...it is not a trk part....it looks like brass & nylon...is it ??? It looks to me & I'm guessing it belongs to door/drawer hardware of some kind....??
It even looks too new for your trk....Plz post if you ever find where it belongs....Good Luck!!

It looks to me like the guts of a pushbutton switch. When you push the button, the guts rotate; either out-of-position to break the circuit (off), or back into position to make the circuit (on).

Interesting
First it is not very dirty. for being in the dash of a car or truck. Can not tell if the plastic looks worn
second it's not electrical, no wire connections, not for a light switch, does not pull out... the plastic would need to be the handle and just not shaped correctly for that..
third it has a 1\4 or 3\8 inch square indent on the plastic. also it has 2 stops
Not a great view of the metal section, but it might be a part that assists in opening and closing a vent, water supply (heater)
the metal part seems to have a design for hold it in place, bends and wings..
Does it look like the "nub" that part past the meal area is broken, it seems shiny...
like it has been rubbing against something..
Best
