Probably cable driven and the cable is broken . That or the gear in the tranny broke (usually an easy fix)

Thanks I will look into it. Would you happen to know how to free a stuck tailgate? My guess was a hammer but I need it to work again, thanks.

Are you sure its stuck and not the handle that is the problem? I had the same problem on my truck, i looked into it and the handle wasn't pulling both latches. On top of that when it did pull them, it didnt pull them all the way due to it being bent. Do an inspection of the handle, check that it is indeed pulling the latch, once that is done check to make sure (by looking down the crack where the latches are) that they are not hung up.

If all else fails remove the handle and pull the latches with pliers works well also...most of the time. Save your tailgate from hammer marks!

Thanks, I took the handle off and the right side wasn't connected. All better now! This truck is going to be a lot of trial and error I think. There is so much going on under the hood that I don't even know where to start.

Go pickup a haynes or like manual for the truck. It will be your best friend when working on this truck. Detailed information can be sought from this book to help give you insight before you ever loosen a bolt on your next project. Everything from Brakes to body repair, engine rebuild, wiring diagrams, ect ect; it is a really good source for information.

I'm not sure all the way back to 84 but I know the early 90's f150s had a spedo/abs gear in the rear end that would cause your odometer problem as well.

I don't believe there is a reluctor ring in an 84 .

I believe you are correct. And I also believe you are correct in stating the problem is the driven gear at the end of the cable that attaches in the transmission or transfer case if 4x4, Go under your truck with a 3/8-7/16 wrench and follow the cable, Once pulled you should notice a worn out gear at the end of said cable. Push the E-clip off with a small screwdriver and take that gear with you to your local NAPA store for a replacement.
